Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Do boys still learn to box at the local Boy's Club? Man, I hated to get hit but I liked the hitting. Do Boy's Clubs still exist? Are they even legal? Teddy Roosevelt's stories about boxing as a child are hilarious. He was determined, despite asthma, to toughen up. He did.

I remember when my short, 9-year-old brother got into a ring with a 20-something professional boxer in 1964. The pro stopped the fight — after he had suffered a blow below the belt.

In the 50's I would average about 2 fights in the ring a weekend at our boys club. If you were a beginner to boxing they would only let you fight one round. But if you were a regular the standard was three 2 minute rounds. I learned a lot in the ring.

We've had so much sensitivity training the past few decades, perhaps some coarseness training might be in order.
