We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Maggie Gallagher is simply misinformed and spreading harmful illegal immigration myths.
Fitst the economics are not a wash. Rather, illegal aliens cost us about $200 billion a year: free health care by federal law; free education, ditto; they send $50 billion back to Mexico each year and with the usual economic multiplier thats $150 billion sucked directly out of the US economy; they are the largest group in our federal prisions and for serious crime; Mexico is now the largest supplier of illegal drugs to the US, and what that costs from Border Patrol, to DEA, to indigent health care, deaths, is not known; and the wages of our poorest workers are depressed to provide payments back to Mexico and to make luxuries like golf and hotels cheaper to the well off in America. Finally, medicare costs for illegals is now $2.5 billion a year and expected to skyrocket.
And there are not 1 million illegal immigrants entering the US every year. Thats the number the Border Patrol catches and they admit 3 get through for every one caught. Others estimate 9 out of 10 get through. So the 12 million illegal aliens in the US is low, it cannot be 12 million if 3-9 million are added each year. I estimate 18 million now in the US(http://linknzona.blogspot.com) and others estimate as high as 30 million.
Maggie's article does more harm than truth in spreading untrue illegal immmigration myths. It is time she told some truths about illegal immigration.
