The GOP Is Dying Off. Literally.

Politico claims that.

It's an exaggeration. They do well in state and local elections. For national elections, I feel they need to inject a larger dose of good old American Libertarian ideas and rhetoric.

Sometimes I imagine that they are afraid to win the WH, Senate, and Congress at once. That never bothered their opposition with their messianic aspirations. I do not aspire to utopia, just personal freedom from government, as much as is reasonable. Trans-fats? Are you kidding me?

The Republicans still do not realize why we gave them such a resounding victory during the last election. They, especially the Old School Leadership, are afraid of the Dems. Plus, God Forbid that they put principle above job security.

Politico claims this because they live in a blue section of the U.S. and have only met 'old' people who are Republicans. They need to get out and about. We have 4 young conservatives about to head out into the world. And 3 of them will be voting in 2016...and it won't be for Hillary!

We are surrounded by conservatives with HUGE families..Mormons, Christian homeschooler types, Mennonite. The only way Democrats can add to their ranks is through the unlawful immigrant crap Obama's attempting.

The left always worries about: free and easy abortion, population control, and worry-free no-marriage lifestyles that increasingly encourage not having children. I don't see their ranks growing very rapidly.

Also, Politico forgot to think about all of the aging hippie baby boomers who voted for Pelosi and other old Democrats...they won't be around much longer. And that is a HUGE chunk of the population.

Michelle Obama's lunches alone have sent a lot of high school kids running away from a regulation-heavy federal government.

I think this prediction has been made consistently the last 40 years. It comes from looking at a single factor and imagining it will continue, uninfluenced by other factors, indefinitely.

Perhaps it is true this time. But the trend of young liberals turning into old conservatives may also continue. When these supposedly objective, scientific, helpful essays come along, I always wonder if they are one more attempt by those writers to influence the electorate. Hey, did I mention that these guys are old? And they all have potbellies and are named "Chuck?" You don't want to be associated with old guys, do ya? You're young and you get it.

Most Republican politicians are in it for the money and power, simple as that. What we need is statesmen, honest leaders, defenders of the constitution. What we get from the GOP is lies to get elected then cooperation with the Socialist Democrats. They are all carving up the country like a thanksgiving turkey asking who wants which cuts and we are left with the scraps.
A great example of the total failure of the Republicans in congress to follow our constitution and stand up to the Socialist Democrats is the new "secret" free trade agreement the Dems are slipping past us all. Why secret??? Even more puzzling is why aren't Republicans talking about it? If any of them had any balls they would expose this piece of crap agreement to the public. Come on Republicans leak it to Drudge or someone. Become the next deep throat and put your country before the corrupt congress and administration.

Doesn't any one else wonder what is so scary that it must be kept secret from the voters/citizens/owners of the country?

Before the 2014 election I pointed out to my Yellow Dog Democrat friend a lame utterance- there were so many to choose from- of TX Demo Governor nominee Wendy Davis. He replied that Demos would dominate in the future. Demographic trends and all that. Greg Abbott's 20+ pt margin of victory was greater than any of Rick Perry's. And Abbott won a majority of the male Hispanic vote. Demography is destiny, doncha' know.

Amazing! Maybe they never heard that the pendulum swings.
I think the popularity of the Alaska show and other Survivalist fare speaks to a larger audience than you might think. I wonder if there is an underlying resistance to utter dependency on the grid and just wariness of the greater interdependency we are all subject to, ie gloabalization.
More astute people than I have pointed out that two major storylines of popular literature have a beware of intrusive government theme running through them. I can’t pretend to know how potent literature is to shaping us, particularly fantasy literature. I certainly remember being influenced by Tolkien, Heinlein, Vonnegut, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest…………. So, maybe we shouldn’t make any assumptions about the Millennials who were weaned on Harry Potter and the Hunger Games.

Unfortunately, by the rhetoric of the current Republican presidential candidates, they feel the need to go in an anti-libertarian direction.

More police power, more state power, more war.

Its kind of horrifying to see that, after the last couple of years, that Rand Paul is the only one hitting libertarian notes (and even he's trying to be careful not to look 'too extremist') and all the others are going full on statist/culture war.

1). Republicans win local elections because they do better than Democrats in one-to-one and sit-down-with-the-small-group discussions about the proper role of government, about morality, and about how sacrifice is sometimes needed for the greater good. Democrats win national elections because they make better commercials, they understand and use sound-bite opinion-shapers, and they excel at causing and exploiting jealousy and group hatred.

2). O's trade agreement is being supported by Republicans and fought by Democrats.
