We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
There is a Vaughn Monroe version from a 1965 concert in which he is performing in a suit and bowtie. I still think his is the best version of the many that did this tune.
The Sons of the Pioneers version is great. I love the Vaughn Monroe version, but for unexplainable reasons I also really like the Baja Marimba Band version.

Best western song ever according to the Western Writers of America. However, I'll go with Cool Water, and since I'm probably twice as old as the average Western Writer of America, I win.
BD thanks for posting the SOP version, which I had not heard for years. Stan Jones wrote it, though. Its majestically haunting quality really got me when I was a kid and it was the Pioneers version that I first heard. As I grew older I always appreciated the moral message of the song, which would of course give people fits today. But then perhaps a trigger warning could be placed at the beginning of the song.
