We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
On the NHS. It has horrible problems, but the link you cited is pathetic! A bit like quoting a diagnosed schizophrenic's hateful former junior year English teacher as saying "He seemed kinda creepy to me..." Insults, with no understanding of the real pathology. The dedicated staff of the NHS are its shining lights. They deserve decent salaries for providing compassionate care above and beyond the call of duty. House calls, hours of telephone care, etc.
Most of the horror stories coming out of the NHS today have to do with the care denied for cost-cutting purposes. Like the managed care atrocities in our country.
For example, I have a relative sent home to die tho still ambulatory, who is not allowed back in a NHS hospital because he is dying. So he wil continue to fall, and fall and fall at home until one of the falls kills him because the family cannot afford 24/7 care and even the most dedicated relative cannot stay awake 24/7. Hospice care only works if the patient is dutifully in bed all the time.
Those of you who are rich and/or healthy can sneer at the NHS. ANd righteously assert that people will be more motivated to stay healthy if they have to pay for their own care. But the dying, the disabled, the fools, the widows and orphans will be the losers.
