Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Hey, I don't know if global warming causes prostitution, but it has been documented that the high cost of universities does. Is that why more women are able to graduate with higher degrees than men?
Read "Fred" on marriage. Most ALL women are technically "prostitutes", its their evolutionary nature (hypergamy), embedded into the societal system; we just call the more sophisticated, less honest ones, something else.
They trade the promise of free sex on demand, for real, current and on-going, security and provisioning, provided by men. (Even those women who make more than their husbands need the security of a male presence in their lives.) Then, when they have their target legally ensnared, they very soon forget their half of the social compact. 90% of all divorces are initiated by women, yet women get the cash and prizes, while denying men their families and the benefits of their labor. Child support is almost always granted, yet there is nothing in the law requiring those payments to be used to, ya know, support the children! Women always want to change their husbands. Men always want their wives to stay the same as they were before marriage. Just why is that? What is it that makes guys rail against marriage? Is someone forcing them to marry (repeatedly)?
If you don't approve of marriage, don't marry. What's the difficulty? Are you waiting for someone to beg you to reconsider? No. 2 and "Fred" seem to be taking this way too personally. That kind of bitterness is funny. "Child support is almost always granted", yeah, that's kinda the point.
I've seen your style of fallacy before, Poetry. It's an appeal to means, conventions, and its mostly an appeal to their appearances as you seem to wish them to be.
But they are not, and they are not benign. The reality of the situation you seek to avoid is that it is profoundly misandrist and it is profoundly anti-family and it is an industry. It is an industry of sexist redistribution and it defies half a dozen prior, constitutional rights when it is carried out by its purveyors. I know them, I know it, and I know the aftermath, including what happens to its victims. Huge numbers of us know this thing because we've taken the time and expended the effort to. But yes, it's point is to award "child support". It's point is to award child support because of the matching funds and the institutional feminism that powers it and is in return powered by it. And so you call the inevitable, natural reactions to this problem bitterness. That would be a cheap shot lobbed out of either ignorance or apathy. You can label reactions to this problem chopped liver but that doesn't make it anything but what it is.

a girl did that to you?
when I did family law years ago, the one thing I could count on like clockwork was the deadbeat dad. I represented them and I represented the mom and I've heard and seen every excuse, reason, platitude, whine, bitch, moan, justification you can think of for not wanting to pay child or spousal support and more you haven't thought of yet. the system is going to squeeze whatever it usually squeezes out of you, regardless, you're not being treated any differently than anyone else. and stop complaining, you voted in the legislature that wrote the Family Codes.

Oh bullshit. You're still disguising the establishment, and no better this time than last. In fact, the difference is that this time I know why. It paid you.

I get paid by a lot of people: individuals, companies, etc., including the Secret Masters who hound and bedevil you. But I don't worry about petty BS like feminism and let others do the professional victim thing.

Doubling down again, I see. Funny, I must be old-fashioned or something because I'd think that officers of the court would be interested in justice and not just in lining their pockets while blaming victims of their system. Or painting them as loons without, you know, real evidence.
But then we do what we do to rationalize our behavior, don't we? Hey, I ever tell you the time I saw a judge in open court recommend to a father that he sue the entire opposing side for willful contempt and obstruction? He was only just another - what was it? - oh yeah, professional victim who'd had his life destroyed without due cause - I believe is the term - and his young daughter subject to psychological abuse and alienation. But then what do judges know about humanity. Especially when there's a fee to collect, right?

"Taken into Custody' exposes the greatest and most destructive civil rights abuse in America today. Family courts and Soviet-style bureaucracies trample basic civil liberties, entering homes uninvited and taking away people's children at will, then throwing the parents into jail without any form of due process, much less a trial. No parent, no child, no family in America is safe. The legal industry does not want you to hear this story."

I do not believe women marry to prostitute themselves or to enrich themselves of their husbands assets. I believe that just like men they marry for love and sometimes find friendship and love and sometimes it does not work out that well. There are a thousand reasons to leave a relationship and really only a few reasons to stay.
A woman I worked with told me that her first marriage turned bad and when she decided to leave him she realized she had nothing and would have nothing after she left. So she stayed two more years and built up a savings account from here earning and household money. She kept track of every dollar her husband spent for tools for his work and income he made under the table (he was a auto body repairman). When she did divorce him she was ready to prove what his assets were and what is real income was and of course she had her nest egg put aside. I thought at the time I couldn't do that to someone especially someone I once loved. But my point is what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. So if your marriage/relationship goes South and you believe you need to end it, I would advise protecting yourself first even if it takes months or years to do so. That the laws don't treat both parties equatibly is all the more reason to protect yourself. You sound very pleasant and more than a tad "old-fashioned."
When you entered the marriage market what you write, may have been true, but no longer: feminism has wrecked the minds of younger women, convincing them they "can have it all." Go here and gain some insight about what has happened since marxist Betty Friedan initiated her assault on the American family: https://dalrock.wordpress.com/2015/03/30/was-it-real/ Me? 40+ years with the same women, ta couple of very successful kids, one of whom is a young woman, with whom I am now good friends, since I ended "parenting" some time ago. I lament what they have lost. I agree that the legal system has been perverted to deny men/fathers their rights in a divorce and have been bent way over to favor the women. I can't fix that I, just like any man, can only deal with the reality. I (almost) don't blame a woman taking advantage of the laws as they exist during a divorce to benefit herself, after all she didn't make the laws. But I simply do not think that all women or women in general go into a marriage with the intent of "scewing over a man". I believe that like men they fall in love and hope that their marriage will loving and successful. When relationships fall apart typically one or both parties are very hurt and want to hurt the other one. To the extent the law allows them to do this the law is wrong and unjust. I get all that. I can only say that in a situation like this you should protect yourself at all times. Life isn't fair and if you are a male, or worse a white male it is legal to discriminate against you and treat you unfairly. This has been true for years and years. I had "that talk" with my sons. Every father should. It's more than just marriage it is work, assault, sex and almost everything in life that is stacked against you.
One example is when we took three of our grandchildren to the park playground last summer my wife asked me to take pictures. I took a few and noticed I was getting dirty looks from some of the mothers there. I gave the camera to my wife so she could take the pictures and the looks of concern on the mothers there disappeared. Our society has been groomed/conditioned to distrust men and a lot of it was done intentionally by feminist. The feminist movement was founded by anti-male lesbian misandrists not for rights for women but to punish men. I am simply being pragmatic. I'm not an activist and cannot "fix" it but I can mitigate the effect it has on me. Re: Ted Talk - will agriculture be allowed to feed 9 billion people
That is a great talk! It just brings to mind how destructive the left is since they are the ones promulgating the anti-GMO hysteria. It is no less destructive then the rest of their hysteria-driven agenda which is the most destructive force on the planet. It will lead to starvation, racial animosity, poverty, and anarchy. re "Will agriculture be allowed to feed 9 billion people?"
It's an interesting question. The likely answer is yes. With growing demand there is too much money to be made by too many people and there will be those on the Left grabbing all they can get, by hook or crook. Furthermore we should recall the French Revolution (and the resulting use of the guillotine on the ruling class), the Russian Revolution and the collapse of Germany in 1917 and 1918 was largely due to the fact that the peasants were hungry. If those at the top choose to starve the little people, they do so at their peril. Hunger breeds instability and those in power don't want to lose their positions. I suspect they are smart enough to realize that. OTOH, one looks at North Korea where the population has been starved for decades and yet the ruling elite remain firmly in control. Perhaps if the ruling class has a large enough tech advantage and a smooth propaganda campaign, they can keep the masses near starvation? The Left would dearly love to control the food supply. I truly believe the Food Police would be ecstatic to be able to issue ration cards and dictate diet to the proles. Phil Glass... his music in horrendous. And because its Glass, assume I've said this 16 more times.
I find "Openings" beautiful; I listen to it often, and it's one of my favorite pieces to play on the piano.
But I admit, some of his music doesn't do that much for me. The story on the Kurds was behind a paywall; can you tell us what the gist of it is?
I find the Kurds fascinating; they came from Islamic lands and share a common history and political/religious influence and yet every westerner that encounters them likes and trusts them. Can't just be the mountains? Have you ever tried to explain to someone the difference between honest research, true distribution of results OR the order in which Google presents it's search results to you?
If you happened to be an expert in any field and if there is any whiff of PC attached to that subject when you attempt to look up what you already know you might discover that what you know doesn't exist. funny that. Earth Hour
A voice of sanity cries out from the darkness. Observing Earth Hour is of such primordial importance to me that I completely forgot it was taking place.
The left may hate families, but when it comes to caring for vulnerable family members, the State doesn't compare at all with the family. When my father (age 87 and previously very healthy) recently had a very serious and nearly fatal illness, it took every one of his 7 children pitching in to cover caring for him and for my Mom, who wasn't coping as well as she normally does. His children flew in from various cities, we covered care 24/7 while he was in intensive care and rehab, we cooked good healthy food like fresh salmon to entice him to eat, and we stayed at their home so that my Mom could sleep. Not everyone has long term care insurance, but I don't believe you get the same level of care from strangers that you do from your own family. A few decades ago families routinely cared for their elderly, I don't think we are very well set for what's to come when the Baby Boomers, especially those with no children, become needy.
