Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Bibi: The speech was good, although, it didn’t resonate like a Churchill speech. I don’t think the entire episode would have made that much of a ripple, if the administration hadn’t trotted out their conga line of hysterical hags and haters for weeks.
You know, we all think we are the center of the universe; it is the human default position. But sometimes, it is not about you, me, us, or the USA. Maybe Bibi was playing a longer game here and that is why he subjected himself to such abuse, in order to get the world’s attention for a few minutes. Maybe….the exposure of vile abuse…. was the point. Maybe he used the bizarre malevolence of the administration and MSM to make a larger point to worldwide Jewry and his own citizens, and it is that the USA doesn’t have your back. The English grammar link doesn't work. I think you have an improperly closed underline in it.
@ Exasperated. A similar thought occurred to me. A lot of the message may have been to European and American Jews. As to the immigration fiasco, I agree. I cannot see the justification for this. We are defeated by party discipline again. Neither does the link for the article concerning "What Was Hillary Trying to Hide in Her Personal Email Account?"
Netanyahu made some significant points. Iran is going to increase the number of their centrifuges dramatically and the proposed agreement with the U.S. will not prevent it. This new capability will allow them to make sufficient fissionable U-235 to make one nuke a week. Are we still expected to assume that Iran has no intention of creating nuclear weapons? What will we do when that day inevitably comes when war breaks out in the Middle East if Iran has nuclear weapons and a delivery system? That could already be the case, we simply do not know at this point if Iran has a nuke or even how close they are to having a nuke. The very nature of this issue is such that Iran will hide and lie about it and the West will not publicize what we know or think we know. For 99% of the world the first inkling that Iran has nukes will be a mushroom shaped cloud over Tel Aviv. Israel cannot allow Iran to have a nuke but Iran has placed their nuclear program deep underground in bomb proof bunkers. Just two well placed nukes dropped on Israel would kill the majority of their population. What will Israel do if the U.S. chooses to do nothing?
I'd probably invest in a Cuba fund. Assuming you can actually make money in Cuba, which is a bit unassured at the moment. Sure, normalized relations and tourism are one thing, but free markets and normalized business are quite another.
There's tremendous upside, but no assurance said upside will occur. If anything, Obama is providing succor for his leftist pals. Re: question of whether House Republicans can even function as a majority
I don't want to seem like I'm taking up for the House pubbies but the Senate could have taken care of this but didn't. They could have passed it under reconciliation - the same way that obummercare was passed, or they could have just said they tried to fund DHS but the demoncrats blocked it, or they could have said that there is no point in funding something that a Federal Judge has said is illegal, or all three. Once McConnell threw in the towel, that pretty much ended the party. One might reasonably ask what a pubbie majority is good for. So far, it's only been good for inviting Bebe to speak. I guess that's not all bad. He showed a pretty stark contrast between him and the devious snake, Obummer, the feckless pubbie House leadership, and the feckless Senate leadership. "It [The English language] is flexible, practical, egalitarian, non-gendered and capable of producing great poetry and prose. "
The accusation against proper English is quite amusing. Of all the major languages, English is the one that developed in a manner to be inclusive of all the people. Unlike in Germany, the same language was spoken by king and pauper alike. No deference to gender was required when spoken to men or women. Class differences as the were/are are based on accents, which can be learnt (see Pygmalion) and coded construct, also learnable. To learn proper English, as well as ungrammatical variants, is to gain the power to travel across economic, regional and educational classes with ease. It frees the individual rather than confines them to an involuntary group identity. Of course, those who cry racism are most often seeking to keep members of the group from becoming individuals and retain them as a cog in the racial machine. "Of all the major languages, English is the one that developed in a manner to be inclusive of all the people."
Nonsense. No language is any more or less "inclusive" of its speakers than any other. The advantage of English as a global language is derived not from any intrinsic qualities it may (or may not) possess but rather from the simple historical truth that it happens to be the language of the last two back-to-back economic, political and military superpowers: the British Empire and the US. Oh, look. Turns out there is a reason large shiny reflective areas don't occur naturally in nature. re Hillary Clinton hasn’t even announced her bid for president next year, and already scandals are erupting around her.
With a friendly, agenda driven media, I doubt the scandals are more than a minor annoyance for Hildabeast. The Clintons have always operated outside the law and none of the enforcers, or most of the public seems to care. Scandal and the Clintons is old news and not surprising to anyone. The NY Post article closes by saying: "It’s not hard to see why the Clintons would be happy with this. Harder to see why the rest of the Democratic Party would go along." No. .... The Post is wrong. It is easy to see why the criminal organization that calls itself the Democratic Party would go along. She has the best chance of winning on the dem side. Once elected it puts the Dems first in line at the money trough. They keep the zealots in charge of all the deparrtments of the bureaucracy. They select the judicial nominees. They will continue to be able to rule by decree. From their point of view, what's not to like about that? I don't disagree with your characterization of the media or the criminal organization called the Democrat Party, but I've thought for a long time that Hillary would not be president in 2016. I have even doubted that she'd get the nomination. She is tone deaf, carries a lot of baggage and is old. I suspect that O'Malley or just about anybody than Hillary will be the nomination. I also don't think it matters because I don't think a demoncrat will win.
I agree with everything you say mudbug.
I agree that the repubs stand a decent chance to win. History is on their side in 2016. But. As you know, the media will be totally on her side. That's a huge plus. And with 0bama in the White House, whose to say there won't be an IRS probe of the GOP candidate in the closing weeks of the campaign, or "ethics charges" that need to be investigated? Furthermore, the GOP may well be its own worst enemy. The American voters voted overwhelmingly to STOP 0BAMA last year. They sent that message loud and clear. How's that working out for us? Another year and a half of a timid GOP congress souring the voters, coupled with a GOP Establishment presidential nominee, and I can see Ms. Clinton winning the election. I don't like it, but that's how I see it. Yep, it's impossible not to overestimate the ability and guts of the pubbies. And it's impossible to underestimate the lengths Obummer, the Clintonoids, and the press to try to cheat and lie to get their guy (or gal) in office. I still think it won't matter. I think Hillary is toast and whoever runs on the demoncrat ticket will lose. We'll see...
If I'm wrong, we're in worse soup than I thought which is saying A LOT. As it is, the damage that's been inflicted on us is too much to be fixed in a single 4 or 8 year term of a GOOD pubbie. re Racist English.
"The multiple privileges are Educational Privilege, Class Privilege, Race Privilege, Native Language Privilege, and Ability Privilege." Ability privilege!!!! It's finally happened Harrison Bergeron is here! Are those coffee cups, cups on the tank, standard cups, or coffee mugs called cups? You'd think the morons writing about coffee would know to specify by now.
The New York Times On Pain Drugs: Heavy-duty industrial-strength pain drugs, it appears.
Proper English Grammar Is Now Racist: Of course it is. Everything is raaaaacist, and grammar is part of everything. Tonopah: Reminds me there was a building in a big US city that reflected onto cars, melting plastic in/on them, IIRC. I wouldn't want to drink a whole cup of coffee beans--they'd stick in my throat. As regards the NYT article about pain meds - In August 2009 Barry noted that as part of 'end of life care' or care for the elderly, doctors should seriously consider forgoing surgery and instead prescribe pain pills. Sounds like the NYT is not following the BarryCare talking points.
re Hillary Clinton’s private e-mail address at State reinforces everything people don’t like about her
There was also this about her the other day, a reporterette being interviewed about her coverage of HRC in 2008: Covering Clinton, what is one thing that has surprised you about her? Amy Chozick: Hmm. She likes to drink. We were on the campaign trail in 2008 and the press thought she was just taking shots to pander to voters in Pennsylvania. Um, no. feeb here. Hmmmm, one wonders if that is why she is falling down all the time? Does she have a drinking problem? http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2015/02/one-thing-that-might-surprise-you-about-hillary-clinton/ Reference the Jezebel /Walker article : this whole business is skewed. The college should not really even be involved (except peripherally) . It's a matter for the police. It should never be handled by the college.
Anything wrong wit concluding the NYT piece is all three? Though its not the first opinion piece I've seen that calls for federal funding of drug research. Socialize the risk, privatize the profits?
What was Clinton hiding in her email? How about the the chance to edit and burnish her tenure at State? "What was Clinton hiding in her email? How about the the chance to edit and burnish her tenure at State?"
What would be more interesting to know is just how much of her correspondence on private email crossed the boundaries of sensitive, classified subject matter. It is hard to conceive of a US Secretary of State who could conduct much business by Internet email at the UNCLASSIFIED level. If Clinton did not use the State Department secure system(s) for classified correspondence, then she surely must have breached God knows how many US security regulations right there. She and General Petraeus have managed to make the whole US brouhaha over Snowden and Assange's activities appear ridiculous - and hypocritical. you might be interested in this Smoking Gun article appears one of her loyalists was sending official memos citing national security sensitive, drop dead before reading papers, etc.
