We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The article about the pause in global warming doesn't predict it will last another 30 years. The scientist quoted predicted it would last three decades, including the current 18 years of "pause" we've already seen.
Big difference.
But, he's only guessing. For all he knows, we could be moving back into a more extended "Little Ice Age."
"Obama is a Republican - He’s the heir to Richard Nixon, not Saul Alinsky."
I don't know who is supposed to be more insulted Richard Nixon or Obama. But Obama is no Richard Nixon. Too bad to! Richard Nixon was probably the only president in the 20th century who was knowledgeable and skillful enough to be president of the largest super power on earth. The media, the Democrats and the haters have rewritten Nixon's legacy such that 99% of the people today would believe he was corrupt and a "crook". Nixon was hounded relentlessly by the left and the MSM (sorry for the redundancy) as soon as he took office. He struggled to bring that awful Asian war to an end in a way that wouldn't result in horrific death and human suffering. But the left wouldn't have it and they used the war as a cudgel to beat him with day in and day out. Then Watergate happened. Nixon didn't authorize Watergate but he was going to pay the price for it. It was thought up by a couple of lower level minion's whose goal was to expose a crime that the DNC was committing. Ironically if it had been done by two reporters intent on exposing the DNC crimes it would have been acclaimed and rewarded with a Pulitzer. But when the breakin to get the evidence against the DNC went South the mess landed in Nixon's lap and he handled it poorly. Not as poorly as Obama's handling of Fast and Furious. Not as poorly as Obama's handling of Benghazi. Not as poorly as Obama's handling of ISIS or Ebola or the border or immigration or Israel... But the difference was that Nixon had a strong and vigorous "loyal opposition" and that his own party believed in the constitution. So he was harrassed out of office and maybe rightfully so. But how Clinton stayed in office considering his actual crimes or how Obama stays in office considering his many (too many to list) crimes is a mystery. Oh wait! Mystery solved; Obama doesn't have a vigorous loyal opposition OR belong to a party that believes in the constitution.
The rise of computers and robots for menial jobs was inevitable but it is being hastened by the folks who want to raise the minimum wage (which is a price control). So they haven't caused a self inflicted wound but they are running to the cliff as fast as they can.
For a long time, the use of robots was mostly to protect workers from dangerous environments or mind-numbingly repetitive and boring tasks but as technology advances, more and more tasks will be automated. Somebody will have to figure out how to make our economy and society work when more and more jobs are automated away. There aren't many scenarios that are pretty. But then, maybe i'm just in a down mood today! :-)
I don't know who is crazier, Bob Bartlett (Obama is a Republican, like Nixon!) or Paul Craig Roberts (Putin is a genius we should all admire!), these days. What is it about some of the old Republican economic wonks these days, in their crazy years? Jude Wanniski went bonkers too in his later years. Oh, well, can't all be sane.
Woman walks around New York for a day, is catcalled more than 100 times
Looks like a racist documentary: most of the men portrayed, including the fellow who walked alongside her for ten minutes silently, are black. Did they purposely walk through black-predominant neighborhoods?
"Horrible Editorial Chides Mom for Not Predicting Unpredictable Crime"
Not that unusual. The exact same thing happened here yesterday. Car thief stole a running car with a kid in the back. Owner had gone back in the house to get something she forgot. Thief didn't see kid because it was dark. Got three blocks before he realized the kid was there, and then abandoned the car. Unfortunately for him, was then tackled by one of the neighbors who recognized the car and realized what was going on.
Police/prosecutor announced he would be charged with car theft but not kidnapping, because he didn't realize the kid was in the car and therefore there was no intent to kidnap.
