We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Re: "Free" higher education in Germany (coming to a US near you)

There are two data points here. One is if it really is free, it's worth every penny. The other is P. J. O'Rourke's comment about healthcare, "You think healthcare is expensive now, just wait till it's free".

There are no other data points. It will be one or the other and since the faceless taxpayer will be paying, it will most likely end up on P. J.'s point.

After forcing all-male colleges to admit females twenty years ago, why are there still any all-female colleges and when are they going to be forced to accept real men?

They have been for a long time, however, college admission is a very selective process and the degrees offered (e.g. elementary education, home economics, nursing, social work, women's studies, etc) generally are not areas males are interested in.

At the time, there was no outcry to transform female colleges to co-ed and a lot of excuses made to keep it that way. My daughter went to a female college almost fifteen years ago and they have only recently admitted males. It was highly hypocritical!

For the record, I am opposed the any movement to force colleges and schools to go co-ed then and now. It's just another example of the left destroying things to implement their agenda. They are doing the same thing to the Boy Scouts.

Is it safe for a college woman to drink to a stupor at an all-women college? Or is their a risk of a non-consensual "college experiment"?

Why do I think the stalker will be released EOS in a year or two and the cycle repeat?

My read of the New York school article is that the mandarins want to make sure their children will always be admitted to the mandarin-in-training academies.

Lead, follow or get the tuck out of the way seems to a lesson the Obama administration is still unable to grasp.

Nice summation of the problems in the service industry with no easy answers.

Consider October 1944. FDR bet the country on a strategy that was implemented '42-'44. By late '44 it was either going to pay off or going to ruin us. It paid off, although Truman had to put the finishing touches on it. Yeah, I'm old enough and was interested enough to have followed it in real time; Google not required.

Moving to Texas: Asks same for Oregon. "... affordable housing markets with strong economies became even more attractive ..." I hadn't heard that Oregon has a strong economy.

Marriageable: Gee, even Brookings calls it the Great Recession...

There is no legal difference between same-sex "marriage" and polygamy. If you destroy the definition of marriage by calling one "marriage," then you must also call the other "marriage."

In other words, there is no difference between irrationally saying it is irrational to limit marriage to "one MAN and one WOMAN" and irrationally saying it is irrational to limit marriage to "ONE man and ONE woman."

You have destroyed the validity of the statement. In Clintonian world view philosophy, it all depends on what the meaning of is is.

This is all much about nothing, because the institution of secular marriage will be gone within ten years. Christians and other religious people may still marry in church, temple or synagogue, but the secular institution will collapse under its own weight as it no longer has any meaning. If anything, different pairings/triplings/groupings will simply be classified as different types of "tax units" for taxation purposes.

The problem is that people run for public office to further the goal of something they have passion about. That definition is easy for the left, many are passionate about gun control or socialism or punishing the rich or large corporations. More problematic for the right. It's harder to be passionate about being left alone to live your life or fairness or keeping the constitution sacred. So the Republicans tend to get people who have a passion that is based on their religious beliefs and sometimes those beliefs as articulated are embarrassingly naive/stupid..

Simple answer. When you look at existing societies that practice polygamy vs. existing societies that do not, the ones that do not come out ahead on virtually every scale. Social freedom, equality- between races, religions, sexes, no matter what equality you want to measure, economically.. Can't think of anything that the currently existing polygamous socieies are good at except terrorism.
