Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Repentance is literally to “change your mind.”  In the famous words of Dallas Willard, “To reconsider your strategy for living based on the news of God’s Kingdom that is available in Jesus.” And that is what Lent is for, to reconsider your strategy for living.  To begin a new process of deep consideration and reflection about your life.  To reconsider what it means to follow Jesus, to plumb the mystery of Good Friday and Easter Sunday.  To reconsider what your strategy for living should be, based on this good news.

Give Garry Wills a break. I am usually rabidly pro-Jesuit (when they care more about serving the poor and powerless than defending Ratzinger--he would have made a nice Grand Inquisitor) and left cold by Wills. I hope for Garry Wills' sake that he doesn't fall into the clutches of a bunch of precious Anglicans. That was kind a sneer in Oakes piece about Puritans....

hat thinking Catholic could not be in inconsistent agonies given the appalling and all too human behavior of their hierarchy recently? If the child abuse coverups were the only disaster, the hierarchy should have all been taken out and forced to become insurance salesmen...But they aren't. Catholicism is not the problem, corrupt leaders are. And some major tweaking of doctrine wouldn't hurt.

Finally, on inconsistency again. The ways of God usually appear inconsistent. Because we are mired and bliond and stupid by comparison. Even the Jesuits, who are smarter than all of us Puritans.
