We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
It's a lovely big plane. They are reporting that the downed plane was a 777. I have no idea if there is any major difference between a 777 and 787. I am sure they are both lovely planes. When they don't get shot down.
What I wonder about, is why the heck they chose to fly over the border between Russia and Ukraine? This is perplexing since planes are getting shot down in that area regularly. Enter the lawyers. As if they didn't have enough work to do between now and their August vacations. Silly Russians, they really don't want to piss off the lawyers guild. That could mean trouble.
The 777 is a great airplane, without a doubt. But it's a fairly traditionally-built, all-aluminum airplane. The 787 is the worlds first mostly-composite airliner. See how those wings gracefully curve upwards? See how nimble the aircraft handles? To really appreciate the 787, you have to see it in person. What blows you away is how astoundingly quiet it is. It makes every other commercial airliner look and sound harsh and primitive. Fortunately, I live within a few miles of Boeing's Everett factory, so we get to see lots of the amazing machines they put out at "The Lazy B". If it ain't Boeing, it ain't going!
I like this plane. It has always bothered me to be in a big jet that manovered like a pig in a sty on a hot day. I want to be in on of these if i get caught in bad weather. I believe If Dave's right about the quiet, then it could almost be a pleasure to fly again. Minus the no leg room and lil brat banging on the seat behind you or the guy with the smokers cough next to you. ect.
It certainly is a gracefull looking piece of engineering.
