We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
All modern presidents of both parties have been too much with us. Talking incessantly, they have put politics unhealthily at the center of America’s consciousness.
George, they have put government unhealthily at the center of American life
Just like the housing bubble. Loaning money to people with poor credit to jack sales.
From the article, "As the fifth anniversary of the Federal Reserve’s policy of keeping interest rates near zero approaches, the market for subprime borrowing is again becoming frothy, this time in the car business instead of housing. U.S. auto sales, on pace for the best year since 2007, are increasingly being fueled by borrowers with spotty credit. They accounted for more than 27 percent of loans for new vehicles in the first half of the year, the highest proportion since Experian Automotive (EXPN:LN) began tracking the data in 2007. That compares with 25 percent last year and 18 percent in 2009, as lenders pulled back during the recession. “Perhaps more than any other factor, easing credit has been the key to the U.S. auto recovery,” Adam Jonas, an analyst with Morgan Stanley (MS), wrote in an October note to investors."
My son just picked up a dirt cheap repo. New windshield, ignore the dents, he's got a good truck. Of course the bank and the old owner lost out hugely because the previous owner got a loan he couldn't afford.
Let me get this straight. Chicago has has the worst gun violence in the nation over the past several years (often in close competition with Washington DC). During that time, they have had no gun shops in the city, you could not carry a gun in the city legally, (could you buy one out of town and bring it to your home in the city? I'm thinking not).
And now Emanuel wants to restrict gun shops that were newly allowed by the courts and video the sales in those shops. I guess he figured the restrictions he had on gun shops and gun purchases worked so well in the past that he had to try to continue to keep a lid on legal gun purchases.
Oh, but wait... He wants to video gun purchases to crack down on straw purchases. I think he better check with his buddy Eric Holder. That might mess up his plans if he is engineering another Fast and Furious scheme with Chicago gangs.
Boy, I'm even more despondent over the state of college students today. Not only are they encourage to masturbate instead of studying for finals but they have apparently have to be show how to do it! And why are they giving away condoms at a masturbation workshop?
100 years ago today the Empress of Ireland collided with another ship in the St. Lawrence River in a heavy fog in the wee hours. The ship sank in about 14 minutes. Over 1000 people died.
