We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
When I was in 6th grade - I had to dodge dinosaurs on my walk to school - we were all taught how to fill out a 1040A and a 1040. And the better math students could, even with itemizing deductions. It IS possible to have a tax code like that now.
I don't see a problem here. If the man that the President of the United States selected as Treasurer of the United States doesn't pay his taxes right because the tax code is too complex and his accountant and tax preparation got it wrong, I can't see how the IRS would hold anyone else criminally accountable.
The tax code is ponderous and contradictory. You cannot know what is "right" until a bureaucrat somewhere declares it right or more probably simply accepts it without comment. But it pales in comparison with the laws and regulations the federal government pumps out and accumulates to trick or trap us as we go through our lives. Anyone who has run a business knows well the maze and craziness of the federal governments laws, regultaions and policies. I would prefer that all law be written in plain English and not exceed two pages typed double spaced. That all regulation be written in congress and not by 2 million civil servants and that it is also written in plain English. I would also like to see a change that would allow the citizens to take the federal government to court at no cost over any law, regulation or policy. Further that the court could not refuse to hear it and that they too would have to give written rulings/decisions in plain English limited to two pages or less. AND most important that all these cases are decided with the constitution in hand and either the constitution specifically supports or authorizes the law, regulation or policy or failing this the court finds in favor of the citizen.
I guess that's why you sign something saying that the information you provide is accurate to the best of your knowledge. I like the letter, though. It's as if he's saying, "Please, don't audit us!"
