We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I plan to turn on every piece of electric I have. Make some banana/strawberry daiguiris with the blender, too. Electricity is the greatest invention ever, and it deserves one hour of celebration and gratitude.
Think of what the rivers would look like if we didn't have electricity. Banks lined with every manner of water-power generating device. No place for the critters or recreation.
Instead, we have large projects but of limited size that can generate the power and move it to more convenient and less fragile areas.
Think of the quality of life in cities with limited gas lighting. The fire hazards from those lights.
And remember if you like the Earth Hour blackout, be sure to use your recently charged by electricity smartphone, pad, camera, etc. to record the absence of light, i.e., darkness.
Thank you! While I had nothing to do with the invention of electricity. my whole career, since I was 18 had been about making it in service of our people.
I too am amazed at how important it is to our life but how much we take it for granted.
Seems to me the best celebration would be to survey a NYC neighborhood and where most of the residents wanted, shutdown all non-traffic municipal lighting for the night. No streetlights for just one night.
