Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Really? "The Dark Side of the Confessional"? I had hoped we were past anti-Catholic screed. While it's true there have been abuses of the confessional (just there are abuses of other good things like alcohol, cars, and just about anything else), done correctly (which has been my experience) it's a joy and a blessing. I'm disappointed.
On another note, the only accomplishment of Hillary Clinton's I can think of is: 4 dead in Benghazi. re: Confession... Your experience matches mine. Glad to receive the sacrament often...
E-cigarettes to the Left are like sex standing up for Baptists. Neither are bad per se, but what will righteous people think?
I don't see the jump from e-cigarettes to tobacco cigarettes. The whole purpose of cigarettes was more efficient delivery of nicotine. “How We Die"
Why the Imperial "We"? I've seen this mug "all over" the web, but nothing in this book is either insightful nor informative. It's as if one can publish a book on a fairly mundane set of thoughts and be praised as somehow "insightful". Meh. Last I checked, the death rate runs somewhere close to 100%. Condi Ricce as commencement speaker, and the silly people want to say "no!"? What an opportunity to willingly forego!
I recall sitting at a Stanford graduation a couple of years back listening to Susan Rice speak, and thinking "why would someone put this third rate speaker on the podium when Condi Rice is sitting right there?". Susan Rice actually told a story during the speech about having sex with her boyfriend on the fifty yard line, if you can imagine. Beyond that little vignette, she was formulaic and uninteresting. She taught us nothing about the world or her experiences that were useful or new. While S. Rice was embarrassingly awful in that instance C. Rice is so warm, accomplished and encouraging. The Rutgers kids are missing a grand opportunity. And all because of a political bias of the faculty that wants to stifle the speech of opposing or divergent views from their own ... oh how far we've fallen from the Berkeley Free Speech Movement.
If only Tiger Woods had stuck to E-Hookahs he would have saved himself $100+ million bucks.
Back in the mid 1990's when Steven Spielberg came to town and the announcement was mad that there had been a big buy out of stock. I will never forget that evening's news clip: Spielberg stepped forward and said, "we are here." In other words he and his cronies had broken into the computer world and all that that would involve, including the wonderful opportunity to spy on everybody and everything. I suspect that the same take over effort from inside is going on now. Ohhhh, wouldn't that be wonderful? A small core group controls both Microsoft and Apple?Several years later I met the Jewish woman in charge of Microsoft's international relations department at a fundraiser.
Excuse me:
should read: was made that there had been a big buy out of MICROSOFT stock. Also, I would add that at that time I wondered why he took such a bullying stance--face, posture, attitude--why was that necessary in a public announcement about a large purchase of stock? Who was he trying to intimidate? Why those words "WE are here". Who was "WE"? Sippy Cups: I thought it was gonna be about Mr. Sippi over at his Cottage. I was bummmmmmmmmmed!
Wilson: I have the recollection that his wife was pretty much the exact duplicate for him, after his stroke. E-Cigs: Next they'll come for candy cig...that's right, they already did. Airbrushing/photoshopping cigs out of old movies comes next. Doobies, of course, well, they're OK! Cheech&Chong Uber Alles! Apple: $1100/hour is insane, but hey, GUMMINT! Class Society: Yup. Company "Unions": A lot has changed since 1935, but not much for labor laws. (Segregation and racism persists, because change cannot be admitted--breaking rice bowls and all that.) The labor laws and union preferences have been achieved over 100 years of graft, payoffs and violence are the root of most if not all of our economic problems. The unions will bury us if this does not change. The playing field is so tilted that businessmen prefer not to play here and eagerly move vital jobs and even more vital industries off shore. The unions last bastion has been in government which has created enormous increases in the cost of government while at the same time increasing government debt. Sooner or later this tower of debt will collapse with dramatic consequences. Reform of our labor laws are way past overdue and in fact it may be too late.
Sippy Cups at the opera? Next thing y'know the opera company might make a profit on the concession stand. How plebian....
Becoming a class society? We've been one since the early days, remember the crack about who Cabots and Lodges talk to or any of the 40's era Three Stooges shorts? BTW, is this rural gentrification? Ecigs/hookahs, the main issue is control. How dare a product be brought to market without government approval and taxation. Wonder which major metro will so restrict tobacco sales it takes a hit in tax revenue? One nice thing about the Obama administration, its always easy to read their tells when they hold a busted flush. "Will Washington Take Down Apple? If So, Why?"
yes, if they stop sending Obama new iPhones... Out of pure spite. |
