Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Exciting news from the Hag Front


In my post honoring Gwyneth Paltrow, World's Most Beautiful Woman, I included pictures of some other famous women for comparison.


A commenter called the following a "hag":

Well, in the latest exciting news from the Hag Front, I'm pleased to announce we have a new entry in this most select of fields:




What's beyond scrumptious?


Her name is Camilla Belle.  Or, as I prefer to call her, "The future Mrs. Dr. Mercury".  She's appeared in about twenty films, although the only one I recognized on the list was Steven Seagal's 'The Patriot'.




That's about as adorable as it gets without actually being illegal.  Even back then, she had that elusive it.

My first thought was, "What a beautiful hag!"

Wow! I agree! I'd never heard of her either, but what a wonderful look! (I can already tell I'm going to use up my whole day's allotment of exclamation marks if I continue much further, so let me just sum up by saying...)

Thanks for the intro, doc, and you're right. She's a far cut above the average good-looking woman hag. She's got that 'something extra' that's impossible to describe.

    I was going for "beautiful", rather than "sexy".

        I have to ask: Have you seen pictures of Sophia Vergara (apologies for any mispelling) without make up?

        I would not go so far as to call her a hag, but she does require a lot of work to sizzle in photos.

        Well, in all fairness, if you took all the famous women who look "beautiful", by standard definition, without make-up, you'd end up with a pretty short list.

        But it just boils down to one of those "There are two types of people" stories. Some people like those "Stars Without Make-Up" articles; others, like me, scream in fear and run the other direction. Ditto those "Making of" specials on a movie DVD. I really don't want to find out the Starship Enterprise is really a 4" model held by fishing line.

          I stand by that "hag" statement and I shall defend it thusly:

          Any woman, or man for that matter, can be made to match social convention for "beauty" by the clever use of makeup, hair extensions, chemicals to hold hair in place, etc. There are makeup specialists who can use various products to make anyone match the social convention for beauty and do it without it being obvious make a lie of "natural" beauty.

          And you don't which is which - thus, unless and until proven different, all women (and men) who are considered "beautiful" are hags.

          There - I said what we were all thinking. :>)

          And therein lies the fault with your otherwise brilliant theory.

          When I look at any of those pictures up above, thinking isn't at the top of my list.

          It would be different for gays and old coots, of course.

            ZING! I gotta admit, doc, I'm not "thinking", either, outside of such tidbits as "I wonder if she'd accept my marriage proposal by email?" And Tom did say earlier that he was really old, so I suppose that explains the rest.

            BTW, yes, Camilla is just outstanding. Excellent post.

            A thought later popped into my head.

            Do you and Richard Bell (above) go to malls during Christmastime looking for 6-year-olds who you can tell Santa doesn't really exist, or do you just do it with neighbors and friends?
