Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Global warming and climate change causes too many lobsters


Suddenly, unexpectedly, we have too many lobsters. I doubt that the lobster community would agree with that.


A few years ago, the cyclical decline in lobsters was blamed on global warming. Our local lobster, Homarus americanus, is the largest crustacean in the world, lives in cold water, and many people consider it a tasty treat. So do Striped Bass.


I think they are fun to eat once in a while, but there are many seafoods I prefer to lobster. If you want lobster, my advice is to get the biggest ones you can find. The bigger the lobster, the higher the meat/shell ratio and the more cost-efficient it is.


Phone the seafood market and ask them to steam a 5-pounder for you. There will be plenty of leftover lobster meat for sandwiches or lobster salad the next day.

Family connection...my Mom was born in "Sin" John's in 1918...wonderful woman. I was able to visit, along with her, prior to her passing. Still have a number of cousins and an Uncle (The "Skipper") still alive.

Gotcha beat, Mom was born in 1917 and is still kicking. She comes from Curling, on the west coast and her father made the first cod trap for old man Whitely in St Paul's River Labrador.

Good on your Mom!! I'm sure she's still up for a "skuff" after the "scoff" on occasion. My Uncle had a business in Cornerbrook years ago...Ron O'Keefe Consulting (he was a PEng)...I'll have to find his business card to get the address. I'm sure it was in the early '60's. Maybe they knew each other.

Pass along a "Don't let your jibe luff" from "away" to your Mom.

The expansion of the lobster catch predates recent global warming and may have a ecological explanation. Several years ago, ecologists noted the lobster explosion and suggested it was a result of the collapse of the cod fishery. Presumably, at some part of their life stages lobster and cod were either competitors or cod preyed on lobsters. The elimination of the cod (by subsidized overfishing) released the lobster from that inhibition, and the greatly expanded lobster population nowadays suppressed the cod by occupying the niche of the young cod.

I have not seen this theory revisited of late, but I would like to know if anyone still believes it. I might note that if the theory is true, the cod will not come back unless overfishing decimates the lobster population.

Used to be that lobster was only fit for the "poor" folks - a trash fish. Like the pollack in fact which was also a fish only fit for the "poor" folks.
