Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Live long and prosper


"...... if you drink coffee, drink red wine, and have lots of sex, you should live a longer, healthier life. Luckily, these are some of my favorite things to do anyway."


My recent linking problem is tending to link many of the same things which our friends Insty and Vanderleun do, but entirely independently. Is Maggie's part of an "echo chamber"? I sure hope not. Maybe great minds think alike...

Of course great minds think alike. Goes without sayin' right? I mean stands to reason that great minds think alike.

Now your non-great minds - well sir that's just right out non-great minds - non-great minds can't think alike because they aren't great minds - stands to reason. Ammirite?

did anyone follow Jay Nordinger's five part rumination on Mark Helprin's new novel. Well worth the read. Lots of excerpts indicating the book will be worth the time. I first read Helprin back in the early 80's; a book of short stories. One scene was an overfly of Israeli jets above some infantry going into battle. The pilot waggled his wings and the Israeli infantryman marveled. I started Winter's Tale with high expectations and quit it quickly with disappointment. Had not thought about him again till BD I guess it was posted something about him recently. Nordinger's series in on National Review On-Line.

The reason you often find yourself linking to the same stuff as IP and AD is because the three of you are among the best on the tubes. Don't worry about doubling up. I often hit a link I skipped on IP 'cause you had a better lead (lede)?

BD, I feel majoritarian when you, Insty and vanderleun link the same stuff, we live on the same wavelength! Thank God for fishing and bicycling and beaches and food and bird hunting and deer hunting and the occasional Alaska trip and Idaho trip and of course New England and the West for skiing and, and, eh, who cares, we are going the way of Argentina and the citizens will become Argentinians/Italians, holding the government in contempt. Life is good, the occasional cigar tastes delightful, (asthma makes it a no-no around the wife), fished a limestoner today in central Pa, fishing was picking up until the kayakers pushed the fish down for an hour since they are fished so heavily, but a day of fishing don't count! Anyway, trying to learn to relax after the disaster of the last several years.... Thanks for the great site...
