Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Here's a video of a kid drowning.
What is odd is why we have this Hollywood myth of drowning even with so many having been trained to be life guards and such an easy way to get the real information out. Until I started reading Mario Vittone, I held the same mistaken beliefs even though I spent years at sea. I actually came to realize I was mistaken over two events that happened when I was a kid. The recounted near-drowning, wasn't really, but the other quiet event, I was real close to the end. In the latter, I was 6 yrs old not much of a swimmer. I was in a private pool with other kids and at least the man who owned the house. I drifted out and toward the deep end bobbing off the bottom but couldn't get moving back up slope. When I hit the steep slope to the diving end, I knew I was in trouble. My head barely above water, I remember my entire focus was on keeping my mouth out of the water, no yelling, etc. People were right next to me, but I said nothing. The man turned around, saw me, pushed me into the shallow where I could get a foothold and that was it. No drama. No one, including me, really knew I had been drowning. Thanks for posting that link, JKB. Like pretty much everybody, I also thought drowning looked like it did in the movies, with lots of arm waving and the drownee screaming "Help, I'm drowning!" the whole while. Excellent post, BD.
I've heard that if the hair floats over the face, they're drowning.
The story on pot arrests being racist is misleading. Most "pot arrests" are really plea deals from more serious crimes. What is happening is a lot of these people were involved in felonies and plead down to possession of pot. A more honest appraisal of what is going on would be to say that more blacks are being given leniency on serious charges and allowed to plea down to what amounts to a slap on the wrist. But that wouldn't gain much attention for the cause de jour would it?
Kimball on Richwine: "Where will it end."
Why of course, it will end in... reality. No matter what folks say, reality (truth) trumps politically correct. Because we have a large store of resources built up from decades of prosperity, these folks can babble on for quite a while. Eventually reality will return. Ach. Mead's quote is exactly along the lines of something I've been thinking, not from the perspective of somebody who thought Al Quaeda was down for the count, but somebody who isn't so sure that's so. Especially since it appears Islamic terrorists have adopted a tactical policy of decentralization aided by the Internet.
First, given the problems inherent in finding such terrorists, access to the subject data could be in invaluable tool in finding them, and reasonably requested. Second, Didn't everybody pretty much expect that this was happening, and given the reality of the threat, want it to happen to some extent? Further; for all we know the NSA / CIA's use of such data has been entirely dedicated to sniffing out terrorists etc and for no other purpose. Third - and the blunder Mead underlines - who's going to trust this administration on the second point? That's the failure. We need a government we can trust to do this kind of stuff without worrying its surveillance powers will be abused as a matter of course. But this Administration doesn't seem to know where they boundary lines are, so they shouldn't be granted powers that we might actually want them to have. That's just swell. QUOTE: But this Administration doesn't seem to know where they boundary lines are, so they shouldn't be granted powers that we might actually want them to have. No administration knows where the boundary lines are. Remember, Republican or Democrat, Progressive or Conservative, they all went to the same schools and all acquired the same moral ambiguity. If our educational institutions still instilled American values and the specialness of our little experiment, then I'd say some trust could be justified for the very short term. But they don't and the "elite" schools the "administrations" come from lost it long ago. You can't leave such power out even when it is set for a specific purpose. Sooner or later, someone will justify a little creep, which will become the new norm until the next creep, until it is all gone. That is why we should find these secret encroachments, very creepy. The people don't care. They ignore the government and the laws. They're Italians.
This is pretty true. The identity is strong, the nationality is fungible. I know a bunch of Argentinians of mostly Italian extract, and the last time the economy crashed in the early 2000s many of them moved to Italy for the time being, taking advantage of some sort of dual-citizenship set-up. Argentina frustrates because it's a great country with piles of resources and human capital but it just can't get its act together. They know it better than anybody and tend a bit towards self-pity. Around the time of the last crash one of my American friends who had been living down there was reading an Argentinian book titled something like "The Wonderful Agony of Being Argentinian". Sadly, the links on the government spying program precludes the we in the US from "adapting" to bad government like the Argentines do.
Just goes to support, An efficient government is an oppressive government. All hope is not lost for US though, I found this MRUniversity talk on the development of institutions and their long term impact on society decades after a shift in economics of a country very edifying when considering the lands south of North America. Perhaps it is the "very European" institutions in Argentina that make survival in the face of bad socialist government possible? QUOTE: When I first arrived in the country, I was expressing bewilderment about how screwed up the government was and all of their stupid policies to a friend of mine who owns a local café. After listening patiently, my friend looked at me and said, "David, is the sun not shining, is the wine not plentiful, and is the food not good? So what are you worried about?" It's a fatalism, but it's also a realism that the people don't worry about the government. And because the government is so inefficient, people can, for the most part, ignore it with impunity. That's not the case in the Western countries where the government has become very adept at using the latest technologies to keep an eye on the populace. Another friend of mine, a retired successful businessman said, "You know, Argentina is the best country in the world. We just need a little better government." And I looked at him and I said, "Just a little better?" And he said, "Yeah, just a little better. We don't want them to become too efficient, then we wouldn't be able to get away with everything we are able to get away with." Maggie's Farmers be apprised, medical marijuana retail stores appear every several blocks in commercial areas of Colorado Springs metropolis.

All hope is not lost 'cause ain't nothin' efficient about US government. That's sure nuff positive to keep US government from oppressing US freeborn citizenry, despite el husna presidenti's desire to contrary. Sultan gets it.

Burqa sales will be fabulous from a cycle cart called Happiness. Once he declares as HRC's rival he will be the large butt of endless fat jokes by the media. He'll just be a fatter, louder version of McCain and Romney. Be still now me heart, pleased yall come to a better sense.
However, portents are portents; Cheeseboy is the designated follow up bat for current criminal in the Whitehouse. Methinks, he may run as a Dem but whatever banner he grabs his back pocket is the Islamist's muhammadan black like el husna presidenti's, and low information folks and Dem's are gathering under his folds. Apotheoses are a very hard lot to beat. Hahvahd! What do they know? And is it as "true" as they claim?
