We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Spring Turkey Season

A pal had good luck last weekend, in upstate New York. Luck, and you have to get up early. 12 ga., turkey choke, try to call the gobblers in and hope they are around, head shots only.


The return of the Wild Turkey populations is a remarkable conservation success story. No, they do not taste like supermarket turkeys. They taste like Turkey.

Okay, so what do they taste like? Never tasted wild turkey.

I like wild turkey. It tastes even better when you shot it yourself.

Richard, I think it tastes like a rich and flavorful turkey. The breast is somewhat like dark meat on a supermarket turkey. It is definitely not the bland stuff we eat during the holidays.

But it's been too long since I've had any.

Thanks Mike. Always wanted to try it, just have never had the opportunity. I'm in western PA and have noticed the turkey population here really grow in the last 15 years, so maybe I'll just have to go get my own.

I've never hunted turkey. My dog (the best vizsla I've ever owned) flushed a turkey while we were out hiking the other day and I was surprised at the size of the bird! Big dude.

You really don't have to get up early although I always do just to be in the woods when the sun comes up. I've killed way more wild turkeys after 9 than I have at sunrise.

I have come to enjoy hunting wild turkeys almost more then anything else. Though this year was different, Spring is normally a very pleasant time to be afield.
