We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Obamacare takes the old way, enshrines it in law, subsidizes it, and freezes it in place


The only thing new about Obamacare is its mandatory nature, its lack of choice, and its one-size-fits-all. It's antiquated thinking, like subsidizing mandatory buggy whips.


Government programs like this inhibit change, innovation, flexibility, and creativity, and hand control to government bureaucrats. When Prof. Mead discusses evolving alternatives to the old fee-for-service model of primary care, he might be forgetting that Obamacare has set it in stone just as Medicare did for the over-65.


Left alone, medical care would evolve according to markets and peoples' choices. As we have surmised before, Obamacare was designed to fail and to bring in single payer, also a blast from the past which would inhibit innovation.

Weirdly enough, I just had a conversation with my husband about this very thing. I think Obamacare will have the opposite affect of what the Obama Administration was hoping for. Yes, health insurance will be ruined by this law. However, the whole system will maybe be saved, too.

I can foresee that what we will be left with is subsidized coverage for the 'poor' and Medicare for the old. That will be the only traditional insurance left. Those of us in the middle won't be able to afford regular insurance any more, or our employers will stop offering it as a benefit. Doctors will start to reject taking insurance, as it will come with more and more controls and ties. They will become concierge offices that only take cash.

People, in turn, will start to see that the concierge model is a heck of a lot cheaper than 'regular' health insurance. The insurance market will collapse due to fewer and fewer people entering the market.

We end up with only super-high deductible plans that the uninsured will buy to cover...you guessed it...catastrophic events! And, thus, we go around in a big old circle. This is what medical insurance was like decades ago.

LOL. Looking forward to 2014 then.

What socialists in this country don't understand is that Americans are used to freedom, choices, and figuring out a way to make a living despite all the burdens of the federal government. This opens the door for doctors to refuse to take any medical insurance and open up cash-only businesses. They won't play the game. Sorry, Democrats, they just won't.

Eventually, the Republicans will be back in charge and can fix the broken system. Looking forward to it.
