We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Such restaurants attract business because they provide good food at good value. I wonder if their fried okra is up to my grandmother's standards. It is probably good enough.
Fried Okra is good food. But that's about the only way that it's edible, other than in a Gumbo.
Boiled Okra as a stand alone dish is an abomination, and should be shunned by anyone with good sense. I tell all my friends down here in Lower Arkansas that, and I have actually convinced some of them.
Okra is something that you have to be careful about in the South. If it ain't fried, don't even think about trying to eat it, if it's called "Okra". I can eat almost anything, but there are limits, and people who have tried to feed me boiled Okra have found out what those limits are.
There's a Lambert's in Foley, Al (near the Gulf Coast and Pensacola, Fl). We've driven the hour and a half each way to take family there. Great food and great service.
We make the run to Lambert's from St Louis whenever we can and always when friends or family are visiting. My wife is from Seattle and I'm from Maine, our families are always amazed that eating out can be so much fun without breaking the bank!
We live not too far from the Lambert's in Ozark, MO. The food is down home Southern cooking; soul food if you will. They will bring you your order in a ten inch skillet that is slam full! My wife and I will be eating on leftovers for two days. There is usually a gaggle of skinny high school/college waiters and waitresses working there and I tell my wife they won't be that thin when they graduate.
Oh yeah, the throwed rolls; my foster son is kind of short and very quiet and the young man throwing the rolls kept passing us by. Turned out there were several girl volley ball players on the other side! I eventually stood up and yelled, "Hey Kobe, I'm open!" and got him a roll.
Another different take on Lamberts dining experience.
It's about a 45 minute drive from my home to Sikeston. I've eaten at Lamberts. Once. Lots of mediocre food. You do have the option of not having your food thrown at you - which I took. If you like having your food thrown at you try it at your next family holiday meal. Should be great fun if you're an eight year old.
By the way, okra in any form makes great swine slop.
