Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

'Saudi Arabia currently ranks as the world's largest oil producer: but not much longer. The Saudis must be concerned.'
Yes they are so concerned they are buying into companies and corporations that are producing US oil and natural gas. So we still are making them richer. Hello sheeple! I don't see where the challenge to libertarians or where the capitalism is in that story. Given it is about urban development in Montgomery county, Maryland, cronyism is what is in action. Yes, there is the use of private capital (assumption) to build high rises. But just using private as opposed to government money doesn't make it free market capitalism.
Instead it is a story about others making choices about their private property even as the author would prefer they do something more to his liking. It does have one good feature. Apparently, the owner at the start of the story fought to get the building historical status thus impeding those he sold the property to, which is his right if he did it before selling thus taking the value reduction himself. But if concerned about the place being torn down for a high-rise, why sell? Unless forced to by not capitalism but cronyism, i.e., imminent domain/urban planning. In the end, this is simply a the personal preference by someone with access to a publication to not have others change things he likes but is unwilling to put his own capital at risk to keep. It is an appeal for future property owners to make their properties as non-descript as possible so no one minds when the property is put to more productive use in the future. I'm in full agreement with you on this -- this doesn't indicate a challenge to libertarianism, it shows that creative-destruction works.
The theater was donated to the non-profit arts group that owned it most recently, who managed to get $4 million dollars in debt before losing it by defaulting on their loans. The loser is the bank that made the loans, to the tune of some $1.5 million between the net of the auction sale and the amount of the loan. Now the new owner has put some millions into new renovations, evidently thinking that this will give them worthwhile returns. If they fail, well now it has good kitchen facilities again, and the next guys won't be starting with a need to have such a huge return on investment. QUOTE: Caleb Shaw: Beer Crisis Could Trigger Ice Age You don't have to spoil your beer buzz with worry about the climate. Beer bubbles are carbon-neutral! The carbon was fixed by plants (primarily barley and hops) using solar energy. Did you know that beer was an essential ingredient in building the great pyramids of Egypt? - {We've been wondering "What is Climate Change?", but the link doesn't seem to be directed to the answer.} By your reasoning, burning fossil fuels, bovine flatulence etc. etc. also are carbon neutral, i.e. the carbon was fixed by plants using solar energy.
If plants could talk, they'd say
"More carbon dioxide, please" "You have a CO2 problem? We'll fix that." BillH: By your reasoning, burning fossil fuels, bovine flatulence etc. etc. also are carbon neutral, i.e. the carbon was fixed by plants using solar energy.
Fossil fuels are carbon that has accumulated over geological time periods. Releasing it into the atmosphere increases atmospheric CO2. Consuming plants, such as beer, merely recycles the same CO2, and doesn't increase atmospheric CO2. Fossil fuels are carbon that has accumulated over geological time periods. Releasing it back into the atmosphere does not affect[i/] atmospheric CO2 [i]over the long term.
Consuming plants, such as beer, merely recycles the same CO2, and doesn't increase atmospheric CO2[i]; however, instead of making beer, throwing the hops and barley into marshes, where they would become fossilized hydrocarbons, would reduce nasty atmospheric CO2 in the long run. You could just bury your beer in the backyard, but that would be a real waste. Carbon sequestration is a possible strategy, however, tossing good barley and hops into marshes is probably not the best process. People have to consume food in one form or another.

Congratulations, you found today's Broken Link. I believe Maggie's Farm is partially underwritten by the Famous Internet Proofreaders School of Westport, Connecticut.
QUOTE: DiploMad: Poverty, Mass Murder, and Liberals: A Complete Package Lots of fertile material. QUOTE: DiploMad: Words evolve. They take on new meaning over the years. Of course they do. QUOTE: DiploMad: The minority labeled the majority the minority and got away with it. Well, neither party actually held a consistent majority. The Mensheviks lost an early vote over party structure, hence, minority. QUOTE: DiploMad: [/iThere are many other examples of this in history such as the insistence on calling nazis and fascists right-wing when they are clearly left-wing products. An excellent example of manipulating definitions. Nazis were known as right wing at the time, generations have considered them right wing. The use has been consistent on both sides of the Atlantic, by laypersons and by scholars. The meaning of the left-right dichotomy hasn't changed much over time, and the application to modern politics tracks closely to how it has been used historically. QUOTE: DiploMad: [i]In our once great, still beloved, but evermore daft United States, precisely those who are not liberal, as in broad minded and generous in their attitudes towards, others have appropriated "liberal" as theirs. Most people in the U.S. don't identify as liberal, even if they hold views on the left end of the political spectrum. In any case, this conflates liberalism with statism. Liberals generally want government regulation of economic issues, but limited regulation of the social sphere; while conservatives generally want regulation of the social sphere, but limited regulation of economic issues. This is consistent with the liberal goal that balances equality and liberty, and the conservative advocacy of meritocracy and preservation of traditional institutions. QUOTE: DiploMad: Modern U.S. liberals are a variant of European social democrats who believe in a big state and mistrust the individual; the big difference being that US liberals have much more power in the world than their European co-religionists ever could hope. Europeans generally have larger and more powerful government sectors than the U.S. Even when in power, liberals have limited power in the U.S. due to the structure of the Senate. A few, small, conservative states can filibuster most liberal legislation. Voters in Wyoming have 66x the power in the Senate as voters in California. QUOTE: DiploMad: Global climate change is one stirling example of how liberals have taken a legitimate scientific-based concern over pollution, and turned it into a monumental hoax, known as Manmade Climate Change. The science of climate change is substantial and well-supported. This distinguishes ordinary conservatism, which generally defers to scholarship, with right wing ideologues, who want to undo modernity. QUOTE: DiploMad: How about with DDT? DDT was never banned for vector control, only for blanket use in agriculture, which overuse led not only to destruction of habitat, but the evolution of resistance in mosquitoes, rendering DDT ineffective. QUOTE: DiploMad: Liberal minimum wage laws ensure the disappearance of the starter jobs, once a platform for the poor to spring out of poverty. That's more a matter of the general economic conditions. Inflation-adjusted minimum wages were higher during the Clinton Administration, but unemployment was low. QUOTE: DiploMad: From the liberal refusal to allow us to become energy independent, Ignores counterarguments. Each energy source has positives and negatives, including environmental concerns. Simply waving away objections doesn't mean they aren't legitimate. That's why science is important, along with an understanding of the downsides, but the gradual degradation of the environment, as well as the effects of rare disasters. QUOTE: DiploMad: the liberal refusal to see what Islam does everywhere it takes root, Not all majority-Muslim countries have the same culture. QUOTE: DiploMad: and the liberals' seemingly endless assault on the family, Oversimplification. Families have inevitably changed due to modernity. QUOTE: DiploMad: everywhere we look we see the death and destruction that modern liberalism brings to our shores and promotes overseas. Topped off with a dose of chauvinism. QUOTE: Steven Goddard: So {Obama and the rest of his band of witch burners} changed their meme to “climate change” Well, that's false on its face. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was formed in 1988. Global warming is the increase in the Earth's mean surface temperature. Climate change refers to changes in weather patterns. The terms mean different things, and both terms have been used for decades. You should look up what the term "meme" means.
BTW, what's it like to be wrong? Presidential Proclamation -- Earth Day, 2013: Last year, we launched a global initiative to cut short-lived climate pollutants that contribute to global warming.

In that same vein I highly recommend the book "Do Hard Things" Which is why I no longer waste my time with the Z-Team.
It is not that my cup runneth over, it is that mine eyes glazeth over. There has been a lot happening in Venezuela lately.Neoneocon had a recent posting where she quoted from the American Enterprise institute blog:
QUOTE: The self-declared winner, Nicolás Maduro, is behaving very much like a man who knows he lost on April 14. In resorting to violence and brute force to silence the opposition’s demand for an honest recount, Maduro has signed the death warrant for chavismo’s legitimacy. Read the whole thing, including my comments.Numerous videos of soldiers and other chavista thugs chasing, beating, and shooting unarmed protesters have circulated around the world since last month’s election. Last night, video from Venezuela’s national assembly showed opposition members being beaten as they protested a gag rule imposed by assembly president Diosdado Cabello. For those who are interested in knowing more about Venezuela, I recommend the following English language blogs. Venezuela News and Views: Good narratives, does good job of explaining Venezuela clearly and concisely to foreigners interested in Venezuela. The Devil's Excrement [D.E.= Petroleum.]: Good for economics. Caracas Chronicles: For policy wonks. Has evolved into a news portal. All of these blogs are run by Ph.Ds: Political Science, Physics, and Biology. Please don't hold that against them. |
