Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Amazed at some of the hateful remarks on the national news sites regarding Rick Warren's son. I suppose that I would be labeled some sort of "phobic" to assume they originate mainly from the God hating left, but it is what it is.

The Amanda Knox prosecution was bonkers. The case attracted a lot of tabloid-esque trash coverage because Knox was, in fact, a hottie. Factions of "such a pretty girl couldn't do that!!" and "poisonous American Femme Fatale" and so on. At first I thought the details about the prosecutor were just exploitative hyperventilating. Nope!! And it got crazier.

Ace mentions the Duke Lacrosse case. I've been thinking about that case b/c I have a Lacross playing cousin getting ready to go to college.

I followed that case intently; my law practice was almost exclusively criminal defense at that time and -- once upon a time I considered getting a Ph.D in English at Duke. Heh!!

That case exploded any hope I had that the Liberal Arts wing of the Academy would come to its senses. Or was reliably "Liberal". A sizable proportion of the faculty at Duke essentially endorsed a contingent application of Civil Rights. White Privileged Male Jocks didn't get the full measure and that was Just.

There I was, my clients almost exclusively Black, me diligently maxing out their Constitutional protections, and these reckless, reckless fools in the Academy want to deny the same to others on the basis of race and politics. Egad. And just a handful of Professors openly expressed doubt about this, at Duke or elsewhere.

Which confirmed Academia's dirty secret: by and large they're conformist cowards.

The politics are so nasty because the stakes are so low.

That and being protected from the market, those with real talent cannot break free of the masters of the clique. It's like they never left middle school.

The Imperial Roman Army was also taught that Christianity was a threat to society....until it converted to Christianity and put its own emperor on the throne.

The Obama Administration clearly sees the US military as a threat to its power. The removal of those 4 top commanders, downsizing, developing alternate paramilitary forces, and numerous hassles of troops (including rumors of a cut in pay and benefits) all are moves to ensure compliance.

This will not end well.

Saw a bunch of them, at Althouse, IIRC. Twas so back in the '50s and early '60s. But what's being said for this is that a young woman's pool of good catches is likely the biggest it will ever be at this time of life. Does anyone doubt it?

I got married well after that time, and my pools were puddles. Still, I found the goldfish.

My father wasn't shy about telling me how much more he was spending to send me to a superior engineering college in order to land a superior husband. My mother called it MRS degree. And I did. No regrets. Back then it was a 7:1 ratio and that ratio tends to stay even out of school in STEM oriented companies so there is no penalty for women even with more than a BS - MS, BS or PHDs. It's a bit of a bubble because everyone still marries in their mid 20's.

The U.S. Army did not list “Christianity, Catholicism, Judaism and ‘Islamophobia’ as forms of ‘Religious Extremism.’” Read the freaking story. The incident was a briefing at an Army Reserve unit. The program was not approved by the Army. This story is all over the internet, expanded and commented by people who do not read sources or use search engines. I thought Maggies Farm would have more sense and integrity than to spread this story. I say again, the “U.S. Army” has nothing to do with the incident.

I am happy to hear that the "Army" didn't "approve" this. But... If the program was at the direction of the army reserve unit then it was "approved" by the army or at least by this unit which is part of the army. If on the other hand it merely used the facilities and the program was not intended for army reserve members but for civilian attendees THEN I would agree it was not "approved" by the army.
