Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Re-born

Gerard's Cut-Rate Resurrection.


I have many thoughts about his post, but I am not going to write them down. I am just glad he is still with us.

I had a different experience a few years ago. I was scheduling myself for a simple elective surgery when my surgeon seemed to change his attitude and sent me for a chest X-ray. Shadows on the X-ray, so next an MRI. When he next talked to me it was to schedule me for a series of tests and specialist consultations. It was apparent that I had lung cancer; a death sentence. In between specialist visits my wife and I found a few days to go visit Zion NP. It was, I thought, my last time away with my wife. Zion seemed special, magical. Finally my oncologist and my surgeon told me I was one of the lucky ones and after having part of my lungs removed along with a grapefruit sized growth I would live. The surgery and the recovery was rough, a lot of pain and weakness. I still have pain 8 years later. But I am a happy man and so thankful for a second chance at life that I had taken for granted. We go to Zion twice a year and it is like a pilgrimage for me. I never forget my brush with cancer but I am enjoying life more even with the pain and minor disability from the operation. 70 and not counting.

A complicated man, to be sure. I have dined with him in fine restaurants. I have tipped a glass with him sitting on a stool by his side in a neighborhood gin mill. I have enjoyed our encounters, and my day is incomplete without a visit to American Digest. I, too, am pleased that God (or Fate, or whatever, or Whomever) chose that day to let him continue among us, and that he does so still.

The topic aside (like BD I'm not up to commenting on such at the moment, and never have been, at the moment), this is writing at the best it can be. Every paragraph tops itself, the whole thing shimmers with light.

Its as you study my head! You seem to find out a whole lot about it, as you submitted the particular e book from it or something that is. I have faith that you merely may make use of several % in order to stress the message house slightly, on the other hand apart from that, which is superb blog. A terrific read through. I am going to certainly return to their office.
