Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

I did not know that this was going on under Grand Central Station

Wonderful eery photos: New York's newest cathedral: Inside the illuminated arches of the city's latest rail terminal as it's carved deep beneath Grand Central.


How cool is it that the really smart, disciplined people know how to do these things?  Civil Engineers. They build amazing, grand stuff so the rest of us can get to our cubicles and spend the day staring at monitors.


Those guys are the people who make the world work for the rest of us, and I admire them immensely.

Actually, speaking as an engineer, props should go to the construction crews. We stare at monitors all day so that these guys can go out there and actually make it happen.

It takes designers, construction managers, and "boots on the ground" to make it happen.

And government inspectors to add sand to the gears.

It is my considered opinion that engineers, designers, construction managers, and construction crew supervisors and section leaders should, upon retirement from the construction industry, serve a mandatory two years in some branch of government at a pay grade above that which which they retired.

This should have the result of improving the quality of both government services and the construction industry.

As a design engineer responsible for some fairly large industrial-type structures, I've always liked the saying:

"Mechanical engineers build weapons systems. Civil engineers build targets."
