Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Sunday, February 3. 2013I hope he cleaned and cooked that skeet after he shot itAll you can do is laugh. Seven Reasons Why it's a Photo-op. Our president is not very manly. Not that there is anything wrong with that. The White House warned people against photoshopping their image. WTF? This is not Venezuela yet. Photo via Ross. Thanks, reader.

--that vent gas/smoke exiting the tube at a right angle --that must be a new over & under feature, i mean really new, isn't it? Never seen it before, not there, not aimed at the next rank and file.
Yeah I was wondering what the heck that vent is. Been a long time since I did any skeet or trap shooting, and I wasn't at a rarefied skill level, but I never saw anything like that.
What's that at the end of the barrel? Screw-in choke or somesuch? its an extended screw-in choke, again, a very common feature these days. its extended so it can be removed by hand instead of a wrench. the lower barrel doesn't have one, meaning its either flush to the barrel, or its missing. probably missing, while there's minimal harm to the steel threads, shooting without a choke just isn't done.
Wait, wouldn't that vent be a lot like the muzzle brakes/"flash suppressors" that are a big no no on "assault weapons"?
I think what is most interesting is that 0bama's handlers felt they had to make the picture at all.
Clearly they were feeling the heat from his politically unpopular stand. At the same time they were obviously worried about alienating their base. In addition they issued a decree prohibiting the manipulation of the picture, as they recognized the potential for humiliating/embarrassing images being created by the Right. A decree that was ignored here: http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2013/02/hahahahaha-white-house-actually.html LOL Funny pics. Its rightly ignored - the federal government can't copyright works by an officer or employee of the federal government.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_status_of_work_by_the_U.S._government Wiki has an article about it. I have to call BS on the writer, who is not at all familiar with shotgun sports.
obviously this is a little barry photo opportunity, but: the stance is correct, anyone standing straight up will experience a slight recoil. there's nothing unusual about this. the gun mount is about what you'd expect for someone mounting the gun correctly without an adjustable stock or comb -- and, more telling, the gun is not a skeet gun. the comb is too low for skeet, and the mount must be high, so it looks awkward. the smoke pattern is from a vented rib, it directs the recoil upward causing downforce, keeping the gun from jumping and causing problems with the second shot. anyone who has been around shotguns more than a day knows this. the rest of it is just carping BS. he's not wearing a cap? its overcast, and not every shooter wears one. no vest? not required, about half the shooters don't use one. no shell bag -- its a photo op. Fair enough, but I have killed many skeet in my time. Never in my underwear! This ain't skeet-shooting.
the floral spray is out of season as well. clearly photoshopped.
"This White House warns against photoshopping images because only they have the right to manipulate the facts."
See, I'm learning what it is going to take to survive in this Obamanation . . . when political committees start forming in our neighborhoods (you know, kids, turn in your parents for not using the right lightbulbs, etc.) On a more serious note - I do love that picture, it at least shows Obama being more manly than when he rides a bicycle. Oh, and I am refering to the photoshopped image in your post - not the "official" White House photo. So Obama has shot a shotgun. There is some question about the shooting skeet. Maybe Dick Cheney is the one who taught him. People change and it's been 5 years.
It still doesn't mean he has changed from this informed opinion of him by John Lott: QUOTE: Well, I know Barack from when we were both at the University of Chicago Law School, and I have the strong belief that he does not think that any private citizens should be able to own guns and that he never came across a gun control law that he didn't like. This appears to be a bit of election time conversion or that his wife has different views than he does. Some thoughts on the posted photo:
1. It's not unusual for a skeet shooter not to have a vest, hat, or light-enhancing glasses, particularly if the don't shoot that much. 2. It is unusual to shoot skeet without a belt pouch for shells and hulls (empties), unless someone is handing the shooter fresh ammo and taking the hulls. 3. Find a diagram of a skeet field. Then look at the posted photo. Try and figure out where the photographer stood, without being in front of the line of fire, without getting the Low House in the photo, any other participants, or any other part of the skeet field. 4. Yes, there are ported barrels that vent upward, that's not unusual. His stance is strange though, not leaning forward into the recoil. 5. As I've posted in another website, there's some fishy-ness with the timeline. News posts put Obama on the Andrews AFB golf course about 0900 that day, and after six hours of golf, flew to Camp David. The EXIF data in the photos shows conflicting times for the photo, some showing 00:00:00 AM, another 19:00:00, and a third showing 19:14:xx. A full round of golf, then visit with family, finished by a round of skeet, which can take a half hour or more, depending on the size and speed of the group. On his Birthday? As unfair as this may sound, the un-photoshopped pic makes him look more like the sissy he truly is. The photo reminds me of a six year-old handling an oversize 12 ga.
I can honestly say I've seen over a hundred thousand trap, skeet, five stand, bunker, ZZ bird, sporting clays shots taken, and there's nothing unusual about little barry's stance. he's using an upright position without leaning into the shot and that's common. that he's rocked backwards a little is no surprise, just that his stance need a minor correction. no one at an ATA match would look twice.
the odd stuff is the lack of a visible shell pouch, but he might have one that clips onto his belt, unseen on his right side. the missing choke is strange (unless its a flush choke), and the low hold. he's not using a skeet gun, but there's no rule against using field guns to shoot skeet. So Barry is firing a gun? Can you imagine the firestorm that would have occurred if George W.'s people had warned his haters not to photoshop his pic?
But i HAVE been around vented ribs all my life --and have a 12 g Remington 1100 and a 20g Browning A5 both vented-ribbed to beat the devil. How dumb i am, i thought the rib was added steel mass to absorb heat and the vents were the holes through the rib. I guess i should've noticed the contradiction of why be adding and subtracting steel at the same time, but latter day shotgun craft is one of the few things that i take pleasure in believing: those people know what they're doing.
PS, aHA, my 12 and 20 slide-actions do not have vented ribs --there's the clue i missed about the recoil thrust. Well, as when Shakespeare remarked to Dr. Watson, "Particularly nasty weather" and Watson answered "Tickle your ass with a feather?" --ya live & learn!
