We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
With all of the recent reports of fake news stories, grossly-distorted or fraudulently-edited news stories, and incurious repetition of administration talking points, alert followers of the happenings of the world grow increasingly distrustful of anything coming (or censored and thus not coming) from the MSM.
Well, it seems to have fallen quickly off the lists but the revelation that the Occupy ??? was not organic but a forced effort by well funded and connected upper middle class operatives would seem to be the MSM's signal event.
Either they were in on the scam and carried the propaganda. A good fit with the MSM's triumphant heralding of the OWS coming. Or they were completely snookered by a story that started in their own backyard and oddly had a lot of familiar faces.
Another good example is "National Public Radio," now just "NPR." Some info on "NPR" from Wikipedia:
"In October 2010, NPR accepted a $1.8 million grant from the Open Society Institute. The grant is meant to begin a project called Impact of Government that is intended to add at least 100 journalists at NPR member radio stations in all 50 states over the next three years. The OSI has made previous donations, but does not take on air credit for its gifts."
"The network of Open Society Foundations or OSF (named Open Society Institute or OSI until 2011), is a grantmaking operation started by George Soros, aimed to shape public policy to promote democratic governance, human rights, and economic, legal, and social reform. On a local level, OSF implements a range of initiatives to support the rule of law, education, public health, and independent media. At the same time, OSF works to build alliances across borders and continents on issues such as combating corruption and rights abuses."
In Herman Wouk's great WWII double-book novel The Winds of War and War and Remembrance the (one of several in the sprawling Henry family history that is used to tell a vast story of WWII)heroine Natalie Jastrow, a Jewish American/Czech dual citizen finds herself trapped in Europe and eventually sent to a Potemkin Village Nazi concentration camp in Czechoslovakia, named Theresienstadt. I'll leave it there as someone may want to read the book and besides i'm not up to plot recap at this hour.
But Theresienstadt was no Wouk fiction, it was real --Wouk just worked it into the novel --and the descriptive passages in the fictional novel are the actual descriptive passages in the historical record, suitably recast into the author's style of course, but with data points faithful to the record.
If you read the book, the starched whiteness of the nurses' uniforms and the immaculate paint on the little Swiss Chalet-style Alpine residence cottages, the smiling friendliness of the Nazi staff toward visitors from the international relief organizations and world press there to see what exactly was all this fuss and rumor about ''European concentration camps'' --will chill you to the bone.
Point is, the Potemkin Villages work, especially in the great meme wars of the communication revolution's comet tail of no-entry-barrier corruption.
They work because they are not what we usually assume they are, that is, a govt's way of fooling the press and such as the Red Cross. No, they are as much creations of the press and such as the Red Cross, in a sort of membrane of the officialdom of whatever govt tyranny is operant in the given case.
Because without the villages, the press and relief organizations would have to either have no report to report at all, or would have to report the truth --which is too ghastly to allow to be known that it is in fact what is in fact known.
