Liberalism 5.0

The administrative, educated elite that regulated both the rich and the poor

The New England—and therefore American—elite abandoned American freedoms for their own self-interested rule. Communism in all but name.

It’s amazing that Meade thinks that Liberalism 5.0 (4.0 being Communism) will be liberal. The trend line in Liberalism is towards, not away from, tyranny.

Once they admired Mussolini and Lenin, now Castro and Chavez. Hell is coming. As New England Liberalism fails, instead of releasing the controls and freeing the people, that control will be applied with a heavier hand.

The evidence that Sarkozy is planning to dodge the 75% tax rate is as follows:
- he is rich
- he has plans to set up a private equity firm in London

It is of a piece with several other articles equating anyone French, Rich, and living abroad as a tax dodger. It seems to me that if one wants to start a private equity firm, London is a jolly good place to do it -- and using London as a tax haven is laughable anyway.

What is more concerning is how we know about these plans. They were released by the police, after a raid on his house and papers related to “L'affaire Bettencourt”‎, a corruption investigation. It is all well and good that corruption should be investigated, but should the police be releasing controversial information unrelated to the investigation to the public, in the middle of the investigation?

I live in Idaho where reintroducing wolves was forced upon us by the government and environmentalists. Trust me, you don't want wolves!

What have they done for us? Hm, killed off what was once a vibrant elk population. Attacked and killed cattle.

A much better solution to your problems? Increase hunting licenses for deer and allow nuisance animals (such as coyotes) to be trapped/hunted in larger numbers. Much more humane than letting wolves take these animals down, and gives a benefit to those hunters/trappers who want to feed their families.

Besides, the wolves that were native to Idaho are NOT the ones they reintroduced. These are much larger, scarier wolves that can do a lot more damage.

As for the cave paintings and "progress in art," there is not much new under the sun. Many centuries of paintings have been based on the earth colors similar to those used by the cave artists, now called siennas and umbers but sourced from dirt. Burnt bones still make good black color. The palette evident in cave paintings is also apparent in many Renaissance frescoes and work of painters such as Rembrandt, Velasquez and Murillo. Color came late to us as it was ground at home from expensive minerals and applied in glazes at the final layers of a monochromatic painting (grisaille or verdaccio usually) because of cost.
The cave paintings are sophisticated, haunting and beautifully executed. So much for years of art school.....

Thanks for the primer, MissyW, a viewpoint that I as yet had not heard. So agree with your thoughts on cave art. What man, or woman, did that, under such conditions. We'll never know, sadly. Though perhaps it is better we won't.

Your italics, they are correct, though Art may or may not say something about the culture that produced it.

There is no implied or inherent end point for Art to progress towards. Same with History, which is to say it's the same for Humanity.
