Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Roy

Roy Orbison's last hit tune. Not sure how it could take three guys (Roy, Jeff Lynne, and Tom Petty) to write such a simple song, but there it is.

Now, is that fair? The song has six chords, which is a lot more than most pop songs boast, and it has three distinct sections instead of an endlessly repeated stock phrase. Roy Orbison put more into his pop standards than most songwriters bothered to do.

I saw him sing the National Anthem at a LA Kings game, back at the old Forum. and from a hundred feet away, I remember thinking to myself that he looked like he had a foot in the grave. and a few weeks later, he did.

I always liked Roy Orbison when I was a kid, but I wouldn't call myself a fan. It wasn't till I was an adult. I think he was selling CDs in TV commercials... That voice! Wow! Nobody else seemed to come even close to the range and smoothness. He was a classic who was truly under-appreciated.

Saw Roy in 64, Jacksonville, small venue, with my sweeties at my side. Great performer. Love the way that, in this film, he is center stage, much deserved.

Orbison's "Black and White Night" Blu-Ray is my go-to disk to show off my sound system. His voice is so pure it hurts.
