Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

With respect to "cannot throw a baseball" - there are many many ads now that ridicule men, fathers in particular. We often wonder who the market is for this, since it doesn't seem to matter what the product or service is. Car ads, electronics ads, everything.
I always hated The Berenstain Bears books for the same reason. Dad is always the fool. I know exactly what you mean --but this ad, for some reason, is just unloaded and --because of the tag line "Give him something he WILL appreciate" --the subtlety, because for all you know the dad my be trying a knuckleball, is just good humor.
Call me sexist and racist, but I've long played a game of noting the racial and gender breakdown of TV and print ads, and it's obvious that white males have disappeared from a lot of ads, while women and black men are shown way out of proportion to their presence in the general population (and don't get me started on the near invisibility of Asians in national ads). Because the selection of models in ads is carefully calibrated by the advertisers and their advertising agencies, this gross underrepresentation of white men is clearly intentional. Except, of course, when the storyline of the ad needs a character to be ridiculed. That's when the call goes out for white male models. Advertisers have long thought it perfectly OK to ridicule men. Today companies that would never think of ridiculing women or minorities still think it's safe to humiliate the white guys. I have as good a sense of humor as the next guy, but when I see an egregious ad like the VW one, I cross that company off my shopping list.
HHS Study: Yep, Head Start doesn’t work
But it does work: It employs millions of the marginally-employable in government baby-sitting jobs. Very well put. Back in the day, it was called jobs for the boys, which given whom Head Start employs, is now termed jobs for the gals. Which shows how far we have come from the days of the Patriarchy. QUOTE: Ilya Somin: Tax Rates and Political Ignorance... The big majority opted for a lower tax bill when asked to choose specific rates; precisely 75 percent said the right level for top earners was 30 percent or below. The 2013 effective income tax rate on $750,000 after deductions is 30.8% for a married couple. Very high income people often receive their income in capital gains, so the rate is often lower. Even after purposefully ginning up the numbers, Romney's tax rate was just 14%. Re digital health records: I have to say that I was impressed recently when my GP had at his fingertips all kinds of records from my series of visits to specialists or urgent-care clinics, which helped us both very quickly put together a timeline of a series of medications and doses. Sometimes the computer age is a wonderful thing.
He's a bright, energetic guy, not a hidebound bureaucrat. It's all in the user of the tools. Tex, take a look at thisRe the January 10, 2013 ruling in Texas that a high school student could not attend classes unless she wore a RFID card, you should see this video at Wired.com
Arphid Watch: ALERT – Obamacare mandates FDA-approved implantable RFID chips! Bruce Sterling walks you through all the appropriate sections of HR 3962, so you know this is not just a conservative/right-wing conspiracy. It's in the documents our Congress approved, most of which is mandated to start in 2013. www.educationnews.org/technology/san-antonio-rfid-tracking-chip-student-loses-appeal/ Scary! Yow! As I said, in the hands of intelligent, well-meaning professionals, it's a great thing. Not surprising that when the clowns at HHS got hold of it, they immediately started to think of ways to turn it into a nightmare.
I agree with each of Peggy Noonan's suggestions with one exception--immigration. This nation will not, has refused in the past, to build a third party. However, it is definitely time for the GOP to take a bold and courageous look at where they have put themselves over the last 50 years! Most importantly they must re-define their strategies for being again the party of fair play and balanced thinking. They have not been that for so long it is disgusting.
right on, AP --a party is just the people --let Tea muscle in at the state level, all over the country, and we'll HAVE the reform party --without the paralleling structures becoming dead weight.

Dems seek new tax increase: Where have I heard that before, or rather, how many times and for how long? I'm thinking: since I started paying attention--maybe around 14. This is either a) a lack of imagination or b) a monomaniacal devotion to their "One True Solution". I go with 'both of the above'. DC tells WaPo the NYT got the story wrong on gun control. There's some kinda BIG disconnect here. Can't quite put my food on it. Maggie's is one of my favorite sites but some of the pix are NSFW. I almost got caught this morning. I manage a professional office and I would never have lived it down. I'm really not a bossy nanny. I just like Maggie's with my coffee in the morning.
Dear Buddy: What d'ya think? Seems to me like we have come back to the fundamentals: guns and ground!
http://iiicitadel.com/ Re: Sultan
We don't have a gun problem in this country; what we have is a gang and a drug problem, especially among the fatherless and feral black youths of our inner cities. The online FBI statistics on gun homicides in the US, which by happenstance I was looking at the other day, show that black males in the 14-24 age group (unlike their white counterparts) are nearly 10 times more likely to be the victim as well as the perpetrator of a homicide with a gun than their percentage in the general population. The same cohort has a statistically significant shorter life expectancy, which biases the national statistics when life expectancy in the US is compared with that of other major First World nations.
