We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
bce and ce are extremely offensive, at least when compared to bc and ad.
The assumption of people using bce and ce is that there is only one calendar in use in the world, or at least only one that really matters: the Gregorian calendar in use in Europe, the US, and other western countries.
The fact that Orthodox Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Chinese each have their own calendar is simply ignored. This is cultural imperialism in the raw.
By the way, astronomers have their own calendar, confusing called "Julian" like the Orthodox calendar of the same name, but different. Some oceanographers and hydrologists, especially modelers also use the term Julian Date is an idiosyncratic and private way.
BC and AD are culturally insensitive, but this will change when the Muslims take over--then they will be culturally insensitive. But they won't care.
Morrissey: "It’s time for all sides to start doing the heavy lifting, and to change the culture through thoughtful and purposeful individual participation, rather than look to government to change it for us." But one side likes the culture the way it is, and resists changing back.
About Bookworm's essay--I was suddenly struck by the realization that white guys don't shoot up black schools these days (KKK standing down), and we never hear of black guys shooting up black schools. Howze come?
The media lied to us? I am shocked, shocked to hear... Zachriel, tell me is isn't soooooo!
Waqf (never heard of them) continue to destroy--quel surprise!
: Before ACA, the healthcare bureaucracy consumed 40% of all healthcare spending... With full implementation of Obamacare, the bureaucratic cost will rise to ≈50%.
Not sure where they got their statistics.
Woolhandler et al., Costs of Health Care Administration in the United States and Canada, New England Journal of Medicine 2003: "After exclusions, administration accounted for 31.0 percent of health care expenditures in the United States and 16.7 percent of health care expenditures in Canada. Canada's national health insurance program had overhead of 1.3 percent; the overhead among Canada's private insurers was higher than that in the United States (13.2 percent vs. 11.7 percent). Providers' administrative costs were far lower in Canada... A large sum might be saved in the United States if administrative costs could be trimmed by implementing a Canadian-style health care system."
