Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Maggie's pages are loading at an incredibly slow pace.
Is it just me that is having the problem? I have it, too. I think I know what it is. I'll email Bird Dog.
Ah HAH! See my comment to Doc on Doc's post Problems in Streamland II.
France! Loads of juvenile delinquents. Of no description. The "why I'm leaving China" seems to be a dead link. I'll try it again when I get home tonite....
Darned Gov'ment firewalls.... I have also found it a dead link: Not Maggie's Farm doing. But how could a government firewall affect a web article originating in the United Kingdom which is read in the US. Other Prospect Magazine links also appear to be dead: you can link to them, but nothing appears. It appears to me to be a problem originating withing the Prospect Magazine website. Unless the Chinese gummint has unleashed hackers to shut the whole website down.

Also: the BirdDog fix was NOT a fix, but that was NOT the fault of what BirdDog did, either originally or later. BirdDog originally had the link to the article, which worked for a while, but then became, if not a dead link, a blank link: you can link, but nothing shows. BirdDog replaced the link to the article with the main link to Prospect Magazine, which worked. Unfortunately, when I have tried to link to any of the articles on the site, I get a blank link- the link goes through, but nothing shows. BirdDog has done all he can do. The problem is with the site, not with the links he has put up. QUOTE: Sultan: By constantly moving to the left, the left is exerting control of the political space, defining the Overton Window in terms of its own political leanings. Well, there's no doubt that the world has been tending towards the political left (more egalitarian) since the Renaissance. http://zachriel.blogspot.com/2005/07/liberal-v-conservative.html Most people would see many of these changes, freedom of conscience, speech, association, the right to petition, universal suffrage, equal rights under the law, worker protection, a minimal social safety net for the old, to be a good things overall. That doesn't mean society will continue to drift left, as there appears to be an equilibrium point between too much and too little government. "Most people would see many of these changes, freedom of conscience, speech, association, the right to petition, universal suffrage, equal rights under the law, worker protection, a minimal social safety net for the old, to be a good things overall."
Laudable goals that, unlike you, I would not so glibly equate with the Left and categorically deny to the Right, especially since these days the Left shows few qualms about using force or intimidation to get what it wants instead of appealing to persuasion and freedom of choice. Egalitarianism means equal treatment under the law and equal opportunity in the "pursuit of happiness," in a word, freedom for the individual person. In this country, the Left long ago abandoned this principle in favor of group identity politics, racial and gender quotas, and ideological conformity. The actions of the Left have not matched their "egalitarian" rhetoric for a very long time. Well, they were the political left at times past. The center has moved, and most people support equality with regards to individual liberties, suffrage, worker potection, and the social safety net for the elderly. Agent Cooper: ... especially since these days the Left shows few qualms about using force or intimidation to get what it wants instead of appealing to persuasion and freedom of choice. Generally, the left uses political means nowadays. That means persuasion and legislation. Agent Cooper: Egalitarianism means equal treatment under the law and equal opportunity in the "pursuit of happiness," in a word, freedom for the individual person. Yes, the extension of universal rights, rather than rights determined by birth. Agent Cooper: In this country, the Left long ago abandoned this principle in favor of group identity politics, racial and gender quotas, and ideological conformity. The actions of the Left have not matched their "egalitarian" rhetoric for a very long time. Undoubtedly, they would say that helping disadvantaged groups is helping to equalize opportunity. helping disadvantaged groups is just another name for discrimination. Why is it the left can only help disadvantaged groups by disadvantaging other groups they do not favor?
Regarding the lefts recent arrival to protecting rights; it is interesting to point out that in the South, as we all remember, that actively discriminating against blacks that 100% of their governors and congressmen supporting this were Democrats. If the left has indeed decided to protect the rights of all Americans I welcome them to conservative values. GoneWithTheWind: helping disadvantaged groups is just another name for discrimination.
Or making redress for previous wrongs. GoneWithTheWind: Regarding the lefts recent arrival to protecting rights; it is interesting to point out that in the South, as we all remember, that actively discriminating against blacks that 100% of their governors and congressmen supporting this were Democrats. Yes, they were conservative southern Democrats, certainly not on the political left. Valerie Jarrett is Obama's brain, although not half as good in it as was Karl Rove who played the same role for George Bush. Unsurprisingly the Left ridiculed Bush over Rove without mercy, but holds their tongue over Jarrett. What I don't understand is how Michelle manages to tolerate having another woman so involved in her marriage. At least Laura Bush never had to fear that from Karl Rove. Perhaps it's because Michelle has such a consuming love of the power and privilege of being in the White House she's willing to share her husband with another woman. When you think about it, she's not so different in that respect from Hillary Clinton. Someone should psychoanalyze the ambitious wives of our Democratic presidents. It might make a fascinating book.
