We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The actions of James Holmes are not a reflection on us or on that imaginary village that raises all of us. It is a reflection on him. To forget that by assigning responsibility to the gun or the movie is to abdicate individual responsibility and throw up our hands to the liberal gods of government and the police state to come and save us from ourselves. And they will eagerly answer the call.
On the use of drones in North Dakota:
"We are not out there to abuse people's rights, but at the same time we're out there to protect public safety," said Grand Forks Sheriff Robert Rost. "The public perception is that Big Brother is going to be snooping on them and that is not the case at all. It will not be misused."
The American Thinker article calling for the end to ethanol subsidies was interesting but missing some critical motivations.
If and when domestic corn prices rise due to the drought, ethanol will still be available but will come from Brazil. They use sugar cane as the base rather than corn. Apparently, Brazilian ethanol has a lower overall production cost than US corn ethanol.
However, the US government has a tariff on imported fuel ethanol. Once US corn prices increase to the point where Brazilian ethanol price PLUS the US tariff equals US corn ethanol price, Brazilian ethanol will be imported to satisfy US refiners' legal requirements for blending. Increased imports of Brazilian ethanol will therefore increase US government revenue, albeit at a higher cost to the US consumer.
Don't expect the current administration to do a thing about ethanol - they have the opposite motivation.
Sorry Knish, but the massacre in Aurora (just passed through there two weeks ago) IS a reflection on us, by which I mean a reflection on the media...in this case, the violence glorified by the Batman movies. Aurora is a case of life imitates "art". A police state is no substitute for a moral state. The police can't be everywhere, in every theater, in every person's heart. Only God can.
from Instanpundit: " 'Holmes was awarded a prestigious grant from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It gave the graduate student a $26,000 stipend and paid his tuition for the highly competitive neuroscience program at the University of Colorado in Denver.' Well, now we know how he could afford all those guns. Uncle Sam!"
So a question for you. If Barack Obama had a son, would he look like James Holmes?
