We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Central government -- the Central State -- has been in the expansion mode for so long that the process of contracting government is completely alien to the nation, to those who work for the State, and to those who are dependent on the State. Thus we have little recent historical experience of Peak Government and few if any conceptual guideposts to help us understand this contraction.
Peak Government is not a reflection of government services or the millions of individuals who work in government; it is a reflection of four key systemic forces that drove State expansion are now either declining or reversing...
Such "avoidance" was at the heart of John Derbyshire's column on the advice parents need to give their children ("The Talk"), which led to him getting fired from the National Review for being racist. Statistically speaking, violent black-on-white crime will directly touch few white victims, but no one I know is looking to be that "statistic." What's there to prove? Growing up, I lived in a few pretty shady neighborhoods, but now that I'm older I accept that discretion is the better part of multi-culturalism as well as valor.
The welfare state is tribute, a payoff, a bribe to a large segment of the population to not riot and kill people. Even the $1.2 trillion paid for all forms of welfare each year is not enough and the tribute must be increased or there will be blood. This problem is ours, we made it, any intelligent person could have predicted this. We have created a group of people who resent us and want to live off our work and efforts and have their own leaders who keep telling them they deserve it. There is only one way this can end and our choice is to keep paying the bribe to put that inevitable day off into the future or stop it and face the awful truth head on. Either way there will be blood.
I will not be surprised to find the following praise of Obama inserted into the entry regarding Buddha's enlightenment:
"Obama's birth was said to be a miracle. His mother was walking through the woods and two trees bent down for her to hold onto. The birth was quick and painless.
"Obama touched His goal of enlightenment after meditating for forty days under his bodhi tree. This idea came to him after the ascetic ways of his teachers had failed to work for him and he remembered sitting under a tree as a child in Hawaii and Indonesia. During this time he learned of his past lives and saw the past lives of other people. Obama became enlightened at the age of 35 and was called the Buddha, the Enlightened One (or The Won).
"During his enlightenment he pointed towards the earth as a witness of his enlightenment, he was offered to be free from nirvana but his decision was to stay on earth, rule the United States, and direct others onto the path to enlightenment."
