We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The campaign contour is pretty clear: The Obama reelection team will not make the case for the advantages and popularity of Obamacare, for the Chuian advantages of $4-a-gallon gas, for the dynamism of a 1.7 percent GDP growth rate, for the stimulatory effects of adding $5 trillion in new debt, or for why 8 percent unemployment does not qualify under the old rubric of a “jobless recovery.” Instead we are going to see a) mostly the spike-the-football sloganeering about Osama bin Laden and adherence to the Bush-Petraeus timetable in leaving Iraq, b) the supposed racism (Trayvon Martin–style), sexism (“war on women”) and homophobia of the Right, and c) personal attacks on Romney’s past.
Thank the heavens that they are touting such cutting edge energy science. Otherwise, kids might latch on to crazy ideas such as this from one of those old white guys.
Crazy. Trees come out of the air? The heat and light from burning a log is just the sun (energy input) being released as the carbon and oxygen come together in their preferred monogamous relationship of carbon dioxide? Everybody knows the sun has nothing to do with CO2 in the atmosphere or warming either.
What the heck is going on in London? Recall that the catastrophic collapse of AIG started in that huge company's small London office, which also went rogue, having fallen through the cracks and escaped careful oversight from this side of the Atlantic. Apparently there are a lot of reckless "cowboys" still working in finance in The City.
Nope --''reckless cowboy'' is what we're supposed to see. There's something else, some structure that keeps surfacing --MF Global was the most recent before this JPMorgan item. Corzine is still free as a bird, still bundling for Obama. He was sending the stolen dough to "London". London is where the dark pool hedge funds --created in the wake of enabling legislation in the Clinton second term --set up, away from US process. Al Gore's HQ is there. BP recently sold it's HQ blding in the 'City of London' square mile, for a fraction of the value --to the Church of Scientology. Russian oligarchs are buying up the media companies HQ'd in London. The list of hinky stuff is too long to go on with in a comment, gotta pick an item, how about --have you ever heard of the Markit Group, in London? No, no one else has, either --tho the three-man operation changed the world in 2008:
re the "good academic article"; the heuristics and biases lit, which is the basis for behavioral economics, is certainly overestimated as a guide to human (dys)function. but the evolutionary psychology touted by these authors as an antidote is insufficient. what is adaptive is not always rational--presuming that "rational" means being able to conform one's thought or behavior to a standard (rather than merely to means adapted to survival).
