We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"People have a great misconception in this way, they think way they solve things by electing the right people. It's nice to elect the right people, but that isn’t the way you solve them. The way you solve things is by making it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right things!"
If you read it carefully, you can see what Milton Friedman meant. The world is unevenly divided between good people and selfish ones. And there are lots more selfish ones than good ones. So you have to provide the un-good with sufficient motivation to be better than they usually are.
Then you can stave off at least some of the bad stuff. And if you get lucky, right will triumph over evil. For awhile.
It's of the same spirit as Robert Heinlein's quote about appealing to someone's self-interest instead of their "better nature". They may not have a "better nature" but they certainly have self-interest.
