We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
“An opposition that would earn its way back to leadership must offer not just criticism of failures that anyone can see, but a positive and credible plan to make life better, particularly for those aspiring to make a better life for themselves. Republicans accept this duty, gratefully.
“The routes back to an America of promise, and to a solvent America that can pay its bills and protect its vulnerable, start in the same place. The only way up for those suffering tonight, and the only way out of the dead end of debt into which we have driven, is a private economy that begins to grow and create jobs, real jobs, at a much faster rate than today.
“Contrary to the President's constant disparagement of people in business, it's one of the noblest of human pursuits. The late Steve Jobs - what a fitting name he had - created more of them than all those stimulus dollars the President borrowed and blew. Out here in Indiana, when a businessperson asks me what he can do for our state, I say ‘First, make money. Be successful. If you make a profit, you'll have something left to hire someone else, and some to donate to the good causes we love.’
This article simplifies the problem of caste systems. A classic anthropological study, HOmo Hierarchicus by Dumont, speaks to another reason that the caste system persists and even is maintained by the lower castes after both Britain made the systems illegal and Gandhi opposed it: there is a sense of certainty of how one's daily life will go, of one's relationships with others and how to relate to others, in a hierarchical society. Dumont does not justify this; only studies why it remains so stubbornly present . Also, the idea of rebirth injects hope (perhaps futilely) in those in lower castes.
Re the coming disaster in Egypt: Money is leaving the country, making it less feasible to import the food that ~ 50% of Egyptians depend on. There will not be sufficient stopgap aid to prevent tens of millions of Egyptians facing starvation.
Their solution: mass immigration to Europe.
How will Europeans cope with millions upon millions of starving Egyptians coming to Europe's shores?
It will not be pretty. Europe will be placed in a no-win situation.
Gringo ... The Europeans are already in a no win situation. But what most of us don't realize yet, so are we. Somehow or other while our backs were turned, masses of Muslims immigrated to the U.S. and were quickly given citizenship. It's impossible to get a reasonably accurate number, but one can estimate that the number is steadily increasing, because there is this enormous push to accept diversity. I tried to ascertain a ballpark figure on the number of Muslims in Houston by asking the city library how many mosques there were in Houston. Guess they figured out why, and the door slammed shut. CAIR has chapters here, as well as other Muslim organizations and they are very close-mouthed about the number of their members.
I'm honestly puzzled. Why would any American decide that Muslims would be valuable citizens? The ones who wish to become doctors would be avoided by any woman with good sense, since Muslims do not value or respect women, and therefore would not try to save a woman in an emergency. That cuts the number of patients a Muslim doctor would serve in half. Of course, Americans are pretty naive and trusting, and probably do not query any new doctor they might encounter as to his philosophy on which patients he would treat.
But even cynical folks like myself would be very careful not to consent to treatment by a practicing Muslim, since their instruction manual, the Koran, designates those who are not Muslim as infidels, and infidels are way down on the values scale, fair game for a practicing Muslim who wanted to become more acceptable to his imam.
What I'm wondering is why our immigration officials have accepted so many Muslims in just the past fifteen or so years.
