A friend emailed this to me, with the comment "How the heck did the South lose the Civil War?"

Because the outcome of the Civil War was not determined by running the Snapping Turtle Wrestling Olympics. :)

2012, the year that the South saves the U.S. Constitution from Yankee depredations.

Before the battle:

"We can lick those Yankees with cornstalks."

After the battle:

"Why did you lose?"

"Those Damnyankees refused to fight with cornstalks."

It is kind of weird in a way, but that's a good question. Even without a strong industrial base to support a war effort, the Southern states were very innovative introducing different tactical concepts and machines that were very advanced. It certainly wasn't the lack of courage either. To me, it seems rather obvious that the reason was they just ran out of time and money.

With respect to the Turtleman - well, I'll put it this way - there are all kinds of crazy people who do all kinds of crazy things for all kinds crazy reasons. What's the quantitative difference between wrasslin' a snapping turtle and jumping off a bridge attached to a huge rubber band? I would posit nothing at all - they are both nuts.
