Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"OWS epitomizes liberalism's greatest failure. The "Me" generation has spawned the "Gimme" generation."
Well, when you're handing out little "You're The Best!" trophies to the losing side in kids' soccer games, this shouldn't come as much of a surprise. I did a little searching this morning for "the me generation" (its actual name is 'Generation Y') and found this little gem: QUOTE: ...from teachers who embraced a self-esteem-boosting curriculum that included activities like the Magic Circle game. Never heard of it? In this game, one child a day is given a badge that says "I'm great." The other children then take turns praising the "great" child, and eventually these compliments are written up and given to the child for posterity. We've sure come a long way from the Psych class I took in college in 1969. In one of our 'psychodramas', we spent the entire time tearing down the students one by one, with the rule being that your harsh criticism had to be 'based' on something, like their clothes or appearance or something they had said in class. Any guy who had long hair, like myself, got the full-fledged "dirty smelly hippie" routine (never mind that I showered every morning), the guy from Alabama got the whole "low IQ, slave-owner mentality" routine based on nothing more than his accent, and the couple of girls who were always dressed to the nines got the whole "snotty Park Avenue bitch" routine. The idea was enure us against stereotypes and it certainly did that. No trophies were awarded to the losers. :) And there was an odd line in the "Air Force Academy Builds Wiccan Shrine" article: QUOTE: ...only three of 4,300 cadets identified themselves as pagans, followers of an ancient religion that generally does not worship a single god and considers all things in nature interconnected. You mean all things in nature aren't interconnected? I'm madly trying to think of something 'in nature' that isn't connected by...nature. Kind of an odd little conundrum, isn't it? Here's a little in-house Maggie's joke: "Guess Which State Has The Highest Debt Per Person" Hey, where's the question mark?! You don’t know me, but I found you tohrugh a series of links, and what a happy accident. I’ve been looking into Wicca off and on for the past 4 years or so. I can’t quite take the plunge, as I’m terribly afraid of mortifying my Catholic family and my agnostic (and horribly practical) husband. I just wanted to say hi, and I like the distinctions you make, those are basically what I’ve told my husband. I’m looking for something ritualistic, but not necessarily in a magic way. Meditation, circle casting, prayer is all similar in my book. When I have more time, I’m definately going to explore your Pagan Link list. As long as you ping when you update, I’ll find you, as I blogrolled you. I really enjoy your site.

Somewhere around '97/'98 an Air Force airman sued for the right to practice his religion which was listed as Wiccan. He won. Soon after a revised edition of the U.S. Air Force Personnel Data System added Dianic Wicca, Druidism, Gardnerian Wicca, Pagan, Seax Wicca, Shamanism, and Wicca as recognized religions. It was quickly followed by the Military Chaplain's Handbook which acknowledged Wicca and outlines procedures for interacting with Wiccan and Pagan soldiers, sailors and airmen. For those of you who haven't received the benefit of knowledge with respect to pagan/wiccan religious beliefs, allow me to explain. Dianic Wicca - also known as Dianic Feminist Witchcraft is a traditional form of Wicca notable for its focus on the worship of the Goddess and on feminism. Druidism - the odd thing is that nobody knows what Druids believed. So you make it up, call yourself a Druid and presto - there you go. Gardnerian Wicca - aka Gardnerian Witchcraft is a...um...more contemporary and modern form of pagan/wiccan beliefs (1939/40 or thereabouts). Based on the beliefs of Gerald Gardner who was a bureaucrat in the United Kingdom's government. It is a "mystery" cult - kind of like the Freemasons in that you have to endure a secret "initiation" into a "coven" which consists of a High Priest and Priestess and 13 other members. What is interesting about Gardnerian Wicca is that it was declared as totally bogus by the founder of Cochranian Witchcraft Robert Cochrane. One could make the obvious joke about "bitchin' about witchin'" but I will refrain. Pagan - I'll have to copy the standard definition because I can't make it up "The widest definition of the term uses it to refer to all religions that are not in the Abrahamic category (i.e. the monotheistic faiths with their origins in the Middle East, like Christianity, Judaism and Islam); within this category are pantheistic and polytheistic religious movements" So its a kind of "you pick'em" in terms of god, goddess or multiples thereof and what you believe. Seax Wicca - another relatively recent innovation in the Wiccan belief system. Formed by Raymond Buckland, an English-born High Priest of Gardnerian Wicca after he moved here to the US in 1970. He wrote a book called "The Tree". Pretty much a Norse mythology with Odin, Thor, Mother Goddess, etc. Shamanism - at its core, Shamanism is a very interesting and time honored indigenous religious practice. It has great traditions, it practiced by both lay and professional practitioners in native settings. It crosses all ethic and racial lines. It is a true religion as traditionally practiced. However, Shamanism became associated with the New Age/New Wave paganism belief system when a gentleman by the name of Michael Harner synthesized and combined various shamanic ritual/belief systems into a new form of shamanism. Kind of a neo-shamanism if you will. Wicca - a general all encompassing term - see Gardnerian Wicca because that's where it pretty much all started. So there - now you is edumacated on pagan religions. No need to thank me - I live to serve. And don't ask me how I know all this - you wouldn't believe it anyway. :>) That was a superb reply, Tom. By the way, how do you know all this stuff?
You wouldn't believe me if I told you. I will but you won't believe it.
I took a course in Paganism offered by the local community college. Why did I take the course? I needed to kill time in between two EMT classes I was the Lead Instructor for. There wasn't enough time to get from Danielson to Woodstock, sit down for ten minutes then drive back. And the class was right across from the auditorium where the EMT class was. Made sense to me. :>) Damn, that must have been fun. Did they force you to wear pointy hats and chant? I also like Sam's question. Just where does one pick up teacher credentials to teach such a subject? Wiccan U.?
