Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

You are correct. There is only one natural lake in Texas. I don't remember which one it is. (Hey, I'm not a native, which means I did not take Texas History in 7th grade.)
Warren "Tax Me More" Buffett
Buffett's tax crap is getting old. I don't think he even realizes how idiotic his tax commentary is in particular when his company owes the US a billion and now this. Foolish old man. First Lady Michelle Obama And it wasn't just the once either. They had to move her ESPN interview into the garage area because she was being booed outside - you could hear the boos in the background. ESPN tried to filter the audio, but they were completely successful. Hell of a race though - went right down to the last 10 laps before a season champion was declared. James Hansen Why is he still employed by NASA? Depleted Texas lakes expose ghost towns, graves It must be incredibly fascinating to see these old sites reappear. When they fixed the dam on Lake Murray, there was some exposure of several small hamlets and three bridges that went over the Saluda River prior to flooding the impoundment. There is a whole village underwater at a depth of 125' on the North side of the lake near our cove. If you travel over it at just the right angle, you can see the square structures on your fish finder. I'm thinking of purchasing a "fish cam" so I can record some of it - well that and spying on the fish. First Lady? Odd, I don't remember her running for that office, nor being elected to it, nor it being an office, nor a title, nor a sign of respect for an accomplished woman.
Why should she be anything but "Mrs. Obama"? Especially as she is nothing more than a felon, not least for taking taxpayer money for extravagant vacations. A common thief is not "First Lady" of anything. Forgive the rant, but the conservative need to be "nice" at all costs is killing us. "Caddo Lake currently holds the distinction of being the only natural lake in Texas, and even that is in some dispute. The lake was artificially dammed in the early 1920s after oil was discovered in the vicinity. Due to the damming, some believe the lake is technically no longer natural."

Caddo is beautiful. I took my kid fishing there a few years back. Riding through the Cypress trees in a little aluminum boat with an outboard motor was an adventure. You could get lost there very easily. I never did find a big body of open water, just miles of "canals" through the Cypress. Who can resist visiting a town named Uncertain? Longview is pretty too. There is one other natural lake in Texas: Big Lake. There are likely others, but they would be small. As far as I am aware, booing someone is protected under the free speech rules. Mrs. Obama has constantly taken advantage of us taxpayers since she and her husband took over the White House. So when she goes on vacation with her husband, she has her own 757 plane, paid for with our tax dollars, to fly her separately to their destination. When he's "too busy" to bop over to some expensive country for a golfing vacation, she goes by herself. And spends. And spends.
Neither Michelle nor her husband have bothered to inform themselves about the customs of the countries they visit, so they are constantly offending the unwritten but universally accepted rules of those countries. American companies which operate in foreign lands are much more careful to ground their employees in what behaviors are considered insulting or rude. I remember when my husband and I went on an Asian tour for his company. We spent one afternoon before leaving on the trip with a company-employed protocol expert who proceeded to explain which Western behaviors were considered insulting by the Asians. It's been thirty years or so since that informative afternoon, but I remember one of the rules was not to cross your legs so that the sole of your shoe faced the person you were talking to. That was considered very insulting. [I've always been an inveterate leg crosser, so it was difficult for me to comply with this tradition. But I did comply.] Too bad the Obamas decided to fire the White House protocol experts who, until then, were extremely helpful to newbie Presidents and their families. Which is why Mrs. Obama made the egregious error of slinging an arm around the shoulders of Queen Elizabeth. She didn't bother to learn that you don't touch the British monarch unless She/He touches you first. I don't recall now whether Michelle curtsied or not. Probably she's too physically clumsy to have done that without overbalancing, but she could have gently inclined her upper body into a bow, as Ronald and Nancy Reagan did. Marianne 'sposed to read, Let's hope the majority of voters in Nov. 2012 have the same mindset as the NASCAR crowd.
