Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re: Mormonism a cult
Just as pastor Jeffress said, that is not news. That is the widespread belief among Christians here in Texas, and has been as long as I can remember. In light of Obamacare and Romneycare, and the pastor's comment of "better to vote for the moral non christian ...", I have the question "Who DID Romney vote for in 2008, McCain or Obama? To me, that would spell it out very quickly whether I would want him to be the GOP candidate.
"Prominent Pastor Calls Romney’s Church a Cult"
From dictionary.com, the first definition of "cult": QUOTE: A particular system of religious worship, especially with reference to its rites and ceremonies. Since I think most people would view their strict "no booze, no smoking, no dancing, masturbation-is-evil" rules as somewhat "particular", it would appear that Mormonism is, by definition, an official 'cult'. A big one, to be sure, but, then, so are Scientology and the Unification Church. "Alarmists push back — on Al Gore!" QUOTE: Enthusiasm for doing anything about climate change seems to have given way to resignation that we will simply have to adapt. For the foreseeable future, this overwhelmingly means dealing with harmful weather events that have been made more likely by human influence on climate. So, Maggie's Farm is now endorsing AGW articles? I like the way the author tries his best to make sure the readers are alarmed(!!) by this tragic turn of events. Something either means something or it doesn't, right? So, how does something overwhelmingly mean something? Unless, of course, it's about ready to kill you in the form of the next hurricane or twister or wildfire or earthquake. In the meantime, I think I'll go work on my Windows 8 review. I'm sure it'll overwhelmingly mean something to someone. We are alarmed up here, because it seems to be getting a little colder every day. Climate change is real. Sun is out today, though...
I told you Romney's faith was going to be an issue didn't I?
Being a Mormon is not belonging to a "cult" - if being a Mormon means that you are a cultist, that would also be true of all faith wouldn't it? No drinkin', dancin', music except in praise and certainly no whackin' the weasel is a fairly common element of certain Protestant religions - curiously enough the very faith that Pastor Jeffress preaches. You also forgot to mention that Pastor Jeffress has a "thing" about Mitt Romney - this isn't the first time he's done this. He's an anti-gay, anti-Muslim, anti everything that ain't Baptist and Christian - Christian being defined as his brand of faith. He has a particular hatred for Mormons equal to his hatred of everything else he hates. With respect to AGW, it is pretty apparent that the alarmists are walking back their doom and gloom predictions recognizing that their initial claims were pretty damn silly and unsupportable scientifically. There are still true believers, the author is certainly one of them, but even they are starting to get more reasonable - with the sole exception of President Obama's EPA. Mormonism a cult :ya' think? As what most would describe as a "fundamental evangelical" I am thinking that it would probably be best if all candidates just left their religion out of the fray and let their records do the speaking. From what I've seen of the past "Christian" presidents, they're not doing the cause any great service.
The War Over the Vietnam War
I think you will find that eventually history will recognize that we kicked their ass, but the politicians gave up on South Vietnam under pressure from the anti-war crowd. What is interesting to me, and relates back to a post Bruce made this week, it seems as if it is now ok to be a Vietnam Veteran. I don't know if this is a recognition that we did what our country asked and were handed a pile of crap in return or that Vietnam was a legitimate conflict in terms of supporting democracy. Smarter people than me will figure that out though. Re the Vietnam war.
In 1975 the Democrats controlled congress and voted to cut off aid to our allies in SE Asia. That made the communist victory inevitable. In congress (then) representative Chris Dodd declared that the Cambodians would be better off under Pol Pot. That was the mentality of the Democrats. They wanted us to lose. When McGovern was running for president in 1972 he said that if elected, he would go to Hanoi on his knees. The concept that Mormonism is not Christianity is mainstream Christian belief. It's the official position of the Roman Catholic Church and other denominations as well. The word "cult" might be unwise to use, but my guess is that if you are a) Christian and b) ask your minister or priest what the official position of your denomination is, the odds are pretty good that if you push them they'll tell you that your denomination doesn't consider them Christian.
The Catholic Church does not directly disallow Mormons as "Christians". The ruling (April, 2001) was that Mormon baptism is not the equal of Christian baptism (and some would say that Catholic Baptism is not the equal to Christian Baptism by the way) and signed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger who is now Pope Benedict. In truth, there are more similarities than disagreements between the LDS and modern Catholics. FYI: It took over one hundred years for the Vatican to come to that conclusion. :>)
The net result of course is pretty much the same thing as a repudiation of Mormonism as Christianity - I agree. But it is an indirect repudiation, not a direct one. The simple truth is this - in one sense all Christian or Christian related religions and belief systems rely on a certain amount of misinformation, distortion, misdirection to get their points across. Being a Mormon is just another sect within the aggregate whole. And an important one as Mormons form a significant portion of the US civil service, in particular the nation's civilian and military intelligence operations. They are also prominent in the State Department bureaucracy. I think Gore just got fired by the Big Bosses, anyway.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/sep/28/al-gore-group-eco-domain Re: Cult
Of course the Later Day Saints are a cult. In fact, so is Christianity. In fact, cult is the basis of culture. I'm an Orthodox Christian, and it should not bother anyone to call a cult a cult. The problems we are having in our culture is becuase we are losing general belief in the foundational Christian cult. Hence the culture wars. When Christians say Mormonism is a cult, that is nothing new or even a negative thing in itself. It is just calling out the differences in belief. Christians and Mormons believe difference things about who and what God is - Jesus is - and what that means for us. Big deal, we are not all the same. This pastor would rather vote for a believing Christian - all things being equal. But even he would rather have Romney over Obama. He is being honest and open. We need that kind of open honesty. |
