We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Well put, thank you. I m so disgusted with our masters in DC I could scream. These jerks don't have to worry about putting gas in the car or the price of groceries or keeping the house too hot/cold because the utilities are too high. But they sure can find the money for the Palestinians or Acorn or their "green energy" crap. And they have the nerve to scare old people and the military by threatening their paychecks. And I really despise their lackeys in the media, they are at least partly to blame.
I just saw a lot of the comments about this fiasco from those in DC. Do they really think saying "revenue" will hide the fact they are talking about taxes? I get that raising taxes doesn't poll well. But outside, DC, out in the hinterlands, I got to tell you, being a revenuer doesn't make you popular.
Obama: Revenuer in Chief
Democrats: The party of Revenuers
I don't have much praise or patience for rants like Garvin's, which fail to recognize that the Republicans and Democrats deserve our disgust for entirely different reasons. They are not equally deserving of blame, at least not for the same reasons.
The Democrats refused to consider even the slightest possibility that their out-of-control spending and huge budget deficits were harming our nation. And they still refuse to admit it, even now after the agreement has passed the House. Their nasty rhetoric has not cooled one bit. The Republicans, on the other hand, deserve our disgust because they have---once again---snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
The truth about this agreement is that it cuts almost nothing from the bloated 2012 budget and defers any significant "cuts" to the spending by an even more bloated government until 18 or more months from now. In the meantime, the Bush-Obama tax cuts will expire and Americans will see an enormous $3.8 trillion increase in taxes: there will be virtually no cut in spending and a huge increase in taxes.
Is that what the Republican leadership thinks is a good deal for the nation? Isn't this the sort of trick the Dems have played on the Republicans before? Is it any wonder people call the Republicans the Stupid party? As of now, I'm a former---a RECOVERING---Republican.
When I was a child it seemed to me that people who wanted to solve problems formed their own organizations or sub-organizations within larger, private organizations, say, their churches. Over time these people decided that persuasion wasn't enough and their 'good' ideas needed the power of compulsion, of the government.
And so all organizations aim to control the government to compel obedience to their 'good' ideas.
Didn't matter what their party was or their apolitical affiliations (as the rock singer shouts: I'm gonna take my case to the UUUUUnited Nations!), the government was at the centre of their thoughts.
This change came over people in the early 20th century. They have lost the capacity to distinguish between the official and unofficial, between private and public, between government and society.
And so Mussolini was proved correct: Everything in the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State.
This foolishness has not yet burned through all our forests. Let's hope the seeds are burned as well.
Washington elites (President, Congress, Courts, Bureaucrats, and media) all totally believe in their own perfection and the rest of us are less than pond scum.
I have never figured out how elitists manage gas and solid waste. How can anyone who sits on a toilet or farts now and again could be so arrogant!
They are gigantic leeches sucking the life out of this land.
Remember high school?
Remember the people who ran for student body president and homecoming queen.
Those were people whose identity depended on the adulation of others.
Those were people who delighted in power over others.
Those are the people now in power in D.C.
And you are asking them to be rational and think about the general welfare of the American people?
Who, then, is crazy?
This guy is a total fraud as he is clearly not a small business owner. He's entitled to his right wing opinions - but not his bogus identity as just an average guy.
What an asshole. When a small business owner makes over $250K, that income is the amount they earn AFTER deducting for all their business expenses, including salaries to their employees and the cost of healthcare.
How does increasing that person's taxes to the levels they were taxed under the Clinton administration cost new jobs?
The idea that tax rates are the reason America is suffering a job crisis is ludicrous. So, too, is the often mentioned idea that America does not have a revenue problem. Look at the graph at http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/govt-recpts-and-expenditures.png.
