We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
"Today," the president continued in his speech, " there are an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants here in the United States. Some crossed the border illegally. Others avoid immigration laws by overstaying their visas. Regardless of how they came, the overwhelming majority of these folks are just trying to earn a living and provide for their families."
Yo, Barack, my man, I'm just trying to make a living and provide for my family. So are millions of other Americans, those who were actually born here and others who immigrated here legally.
Since you seem so willing to cut illegal immigrants some slack when they break the law, how about cutting those of us who aren't illegal immigrants some slack when we break the law too?
Rail is great in the right place, for the right purpose. Such places are rare in the US but, in the Boston - DC corridor, rail is good. Still subsidized, but heavily used - and all those cars could not fit onto the NYC roads.
Photo: The Striped Bass on the steeple of the Cuttyhunk Church. I am due another visit to good old Cuttyhunk.I am due another visit to Monhegan Island, too.Such a big, wonderful earth, and so little time to see and do everything...which reminds me of a story. A year or two ago, my energetic and ambitious Wall St. daughter got into some jolly verbal jousting with her boss.He challenged her to sky-dive. She did, and has the vid to prove it.She is doing well at work, and having great fun with it.
The open borders article was quite bizarre to read. In the middle of the screed that borders must be open, the author undercuts his own argument with: Milton Friedman said, “You cannot simultaneously have free immigration and a welfare state.” That is true if immigrants have full access to welfare benefits. So prudence requires that open borders be coupled with denying welfare benefits to (most of) the foreign-born.
Since denying welfare to illegals does not happen, will not happen and, practically, cannot happen the whole premise of the article is negated.
Over the years Bill and Hillary Clinton have established a clear and consistent record of commitment to truth, justice, and the American way: they have no commitment. We shouldn't let either one of them close to anything that affects our freedoms; they've never had our best interests at heart.
Notice the use of the logically contradictory term illegal imigrant for illegal alien. By definition an imigrant is here legally. Another common term is undocumented worker. A few weeks ago ther was a bank robbery attempt by a hispanic who was subsequently shot and killed by the police as he was attempting to escape. I was waiting for the media to refer to him as an undocumented customer.
Ahh, Ray... You just quoted one of the most annoying to me incorrect substitutions in our present day English. As you say, the word immigrant is not a substitute for illegal alien. An immigrant is by definition a person who has come to another country legally, not invaded said country illegally by sneaking across the border as an illegal alien does. Another incorrect equivalent is "undocumented worker." These illegals generally have lots of documents. Mostly they are forgeries.
That figure quoted by our President in his disgraceful speech in El Paso [the 11 million illegal aliens] was perhaps true back in 2004, but the number is way out of date. There are lots more of them now, maybe even as many as 14 million, and increasing every day. And over the past two or three years, these illegals, and the drug cartels, have murdered more than a thousand American citizens. Soo ... yes, Mr. Obama, we would like a moat along our border and alligators too, to protect those of us citizens who are left alive. The spreading stain of illegal immigration is growing every day, and we are becoming less safe, a fact which Mr. Obama seems to think is funny.
My dislike for him as a person and a politician is growing by leaps and bounds. In my more than 80 years of life, I have never heard a President of the United States speak so mockingly, so disrespectfully of the citizens he has sworn to protect.
