Inside Every Leftist Is a Little Authoritarian Dying to Get Out

h/t Insty, who has been doing a heck of a job lately. I have never understood why people who view themselves as my betters seem to want to control me and my way of life. What motivates that desire for control?

It's no wonder the Left loves dictators.

I never thought about it before, but that probably is the reason they love dictators. Yes, that has to be the reason! They also like democracy, but only when it suits them.

Celebrities are projecting their shortcomings such as a lack of self control on the rest of us. They are wealthy enough to get away with it.
We don't have as much easy money as our betters. We have strength and independance from living normal lives. They don't understand that and think the government needs to step in and take care of us before all hell breaks loose.

I think it is the personal immaturity that drives most lefties. Its like kids, rebellious but wanting parental boundaries. So they want the license to do as they please but admire authority (very longdistance) when it won't affect them personally. Much of their ideology is emotional and selfish (and theoretical). They will accept the personal benefits of authority and discipline (water, sewer, power, communications, streets, fire and police) but protest other forms of parental authority -- corporations, military that do not have a personal benefit. When you spend much time in business, you learn that most new products, services, and business fail. Say, 90% fail. Even though everyone involved with the new product or service is quite sure it will be a winner. Even Microsoft was less than 50%, and business superstar once-in-a-generation Steve Jobs is batting about .750. The marketplace is king, and it is very fickle. You learn humility, perseverance, and cut your losses early. Every failure is just the learning experience you need to create a successful product.

People who work in government know, if they fail one time, they're fired. So they force a sub-optimal solution, and if necessary, they will use force. Working in government means you validate your brilliance, because your ideas never fail, even if it means the people who don't like it have to be "re-educated".

People who go into government don't like marketplace outcomes. They think they are smarter than the market. They imagine a world as it should be; and despise one that is always becoming, with no one in charge.

Here is my anecdote that encapsulates the quote.

When I was in college, there was an option on the tuition statement to add $5 to your tab and have the money put into a scholarship fund for the disadvantaged.

The program was popular with students when initiated in the late 60s, but by the mid 70s when I attended, contributions to the fund were drying up.

Anyway, one night I was in a friend's dorm room watching him pay his tuition and I noticed he had checked the box to donate. I commented that no one else I knew did that.

His reply was, 'Well I think it is a good idea and therefore it should be mandatory,"

And that sums up lib thinking in one line.

It is hatred of the self and of what they are within. It is also a bit of projection.

The hatred of self drives them to find a cause which they can believe in and which validates them. The cause always requires individual conformity and reduction of liberty. In return the individual receives validation, purpose, community among other things. In part this requires the mass movement to seek control and power to fulfill the member’s needs for purpose.

Projection also leads to the need for control and power. The individual is unwilling to donate money to the disadvantage college student so he believes that everyone would be unwilling to donate money. Thus, coercion must be used to require proper behavior.

Eric Hoffer outlined this process in his book The True Believer. A good read and necessary to understand nearly everything going on today.

The left is more affected by this dynamic because it has moved from organized religion to secular humanism which removes from the individuals on the left the reformed mass movements of western mainstream religions.

What motivates that desire for control?

Insecurity. I work for an Obama appointee (Senate-confirmed) who is an asshole. Very bright, he takes pleasure in belittling people who fall into his verbal traps. He has absolutely no experience in our field of endeavor. Before his arrival, we had a half-military, half civilian force of about 45 action officers (military O-6, civilian GS-15) who were focused on our primary mission, which is the test and evaluation of major weapon system acquisition programs. Our morale was excellent, because military-style leadership was rampant, and we hand-picked our post-command officers. More than a half-dozen have quit at the first opportunity.

Puzzled by the new appointee's meanness and tyrannical "leadership" style, I sought the good counsel of my wife, as I have for years. After a few discussions about negative happenings and plummeting morale, she hit on it: He's insecure and intimidated by you guys, who have been there, done that.

That's almost incredible, since one of the leadership traits we held close was always loyalty. Our organizational mantra was "give your best advice, then work hard to make the Commander's desire come true." Standard Leadership 101.

I generalize her diagnosis of insecurity to many progressives confronting evil conservatives. They're afraid of failure and criticism. And that's getting worse every day that this pitiful bunch remain in charge.
