We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
“The government decides to try to increase the middle class by subsidizing things that middle class people have: If middle-class people go to college and own homes, then surely if more people go to college and own homes, we’ll have more middle-class people.
But homeownership and college aren’t causes of middle-class status, they’re markers for possessing the kinds of traits — self-discipline, the ability to defer gratification, etc. — that let you enter, and stay, in the middle class. Subsidizing the markers doesn’t produce the traits; if anything, it undermines them.”
"This General Assembly will not be intimidated by nomadic bands of professional agitators on spring break bent on disruption," he said. "We talk through our differences here. Tennessee is not Wisconsin."
"The case that Immigration Doesn't Hurt Native-Born Workers"
This article appeared on The Daily Caller on April 9, 2011.
The above is the first problem with this article. The second is that it is likely written by a tenured professor who has Illegals mow his lawn while they collect SSI benefits. The facts and figures he sites must be collected by the 'King has New Clothes' review. He is as far from reality as the Ivory Tower will allow. I'm surprised to read this at Cato but as it goes with most things, maybe it's Murphy's Law, you get a brilliant, optimistic expositor like Julian Simon, his weakest ideas are going to be the ones most expounded upon and shared, in this case unlimited emigration/immigration and open borders.
If we had trained teachers pouring over the border this would help keep our taxes down so you could actually believe that you owned your property instead of renting it from the State with property taxes going up every year.
Let me tell you what the real truth is about community colleges and dumb students. The various special interest groups are alive and well at community colleges. The English department insists that every student meet certain proficiency levels and test every incoming student. If you don't pass the test then you take remedial classes. The math department does the same thing. So who benefits? The English and math teacher benefit! Now this is a good deal for the teachers, more jobs, a chance to show you are overworked and need to be paid more. For the students; not so much. Some kid wanting to be a mechanic sits in a summer school cramming for an English and Algebra test so he can learn a skill in the fall. He doesn't get to work that summer so he can save for college he is busy taking classes that are only intended to provide jobs for English and math teachers. What will he do with these "skills" as a mechanic??? More to the point could he even pass the same test a year later? Certainly there are some degrees/programs where the English and/or math skills should be good but for most/many entering community college this is nothing more then a "tax". They take your money and your time and give it to state workers.
I was just wondering--late last night, or early this morning:
what is that called when your opposition says that you are not worth listening because you don't do something else (not even part of the argument). In real life we call it a put down tactic. Such as in the argument about Christian money and the anti gay argument. "If Christians would stop obsessing about gays and just be more generous to the poor." What is that debate tactic? So that if I say the sky is blue, you come back with yeah, but your truck is ugly! I know there is a formal title for this strategy where you attack the honor and integrity of the opponent without every saying--please tell me! Thank you!
