We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Well, it's our church's Men's Ski (and beer) Retreat weekend at Killington, and I think maybe our Women's Retreat Weekend too somewhere else. But we're just back from 8 days away, so we passed on them this year. I have not skied once this year. Damn shame, because it gives me the greatest joy to wrestle and sweat with a mountain and the trees in the snow and cold. Plus I really need new skis if I intend to stick with this crazy, exhilarating lifelong recreation of mine.
Finishing our Iris week with this tune. It reminds me of Roger McGuinn - another good Jesus freak.
Thanks for spreading Iris's unique, pure "old time" sound. For some it's an acquired taste, though. And you mention Roger McQuinn, another icon. He helped created the Martin HD7, a 7 string acoustic guitar, which doubled the G (with a higher octave string) to give a unique 12-string sound to his solo performances.
A few years ago my oldest son, now 24, an accomplished free style skier and coach told me I was getting too old for the ancient skis I was using. He was always being given skis by manufacturers so he handed me up a pair of skis.
Phat!
By which I mean that modern wide skis have literally changed my life as a skier. I went from the occasional dutiful trip to a mad crazed get out as many weekends as possible kind of guy.
Carter Burwell's opening credits soundtrack for Coen's A Serious Man --this wants earphones and max volume, if you want your socks knocked off real good
Did Iris have a small part, in the new True Grit, rocking on a porch and singing "Leaning On The Everlasting Arms"? I think I saw a video (movie clip) of this but I can't find it and I forgot to save it. It is a stirring version of that song. There are a number of audio clips.
--have seen it twice, Garry, and haven't noticed that scene. The song is played as the closing credits come up --just as a viewer is perhaps reflecting on how an adventure may last only a few days but become one's touchstone of life. Then the song comes up and the time catching up with us all, goes infinite.
I haven't seen the movie. It could have been a clip from "the cutting room floor", that I saw, or even a different song all together. I'll keep searching.
