We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Cuz it's Real Life, not fairy tale.
Heavier snows may stick around, climate experts say
Let's all plan our lives around what the experts say. That's a good plan, if one is utterly lacking in common sense and "critical thinking."
In a way, this all makes me feel more interested in my trip to Egypt and the Middle East this summer. Danger and chaos adds a little spice to life.
Mostly, those gloomy Swedes are crazy-depressed, Moslem-loving, atheistic drunk and sex-addicted Socialists who hate hard or unpleasant work, but they got this one thing right.
Because it sucks, and takes away freedom of choice.

The '5 things about Egypt's riot' doesn't pass the smell test.
Especially, 1) The Muslim Brotherhood has renounced violence, and 2) the MB & Al Qaeda are "first-rank enemies". We've heard that before, haven't we?
In the Middle East, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
I do agree that there's nothing we can do about it.
After posting this I wished I had said, "I've got $5 that says the writer of this is an Ivy Leaguer!"
I checked her out (Heather Hurlburt) and yes, Brown University. Great resume too- Special Assistant & Speechwriter to the President. Guess which Pres? Yes, Clinton.
Always keep your bullshit detector calibrated!
Missy Heather is a shill for the Islamists.
This is no democratic revolution but an Islamic Revolution which if able to depose Mubarak and his National Democratic Party will bring another Islamic sharia state to plaque the world.
"Why isn't marriage the way I thought it would be.?" Marriage is selfless. Any selfishness in a marriage is a blow to its longevity.
The Dems were right on Bush's SS reform, though undoubtedly for the wrong reason.
You can no more privatize retirement at 65 than you can make it work as a government payout.
There aren't enough workers per retiree at a 65 cutoff. If something can't work, it won't. (For a privatized system, there would be too many sellers of stock for income and too few buyers, if the retirement age tried to be 65).
The absolutely simple solution can be done instantly: raise the retirement age for benefits until the demographics balance. That keeps SS as an inflation protected annuity that insures you from outliving your income, just as fire insurance protects you from your house burning down.
If you want to retire earlier than the cutoff, do it on your own dime to bridge the gap.
You should read up on the success of the SS system in Chile (see here: http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=5981).
Of course another way to do it is to allow people to invest their and their employer's SS contributions the way they want. It would cost the government nothing. Oh, some people will screw it up? Well, now everybody going forward gets screwed. I'll take my own chances with my money and pass whatever I have left over to my daughter who will definitely need it. That's something that SS doesn't allow me to do.
Best of all would be that the giverment stop trying to help me. All this help they're giving me is costing me a fortune and I'm no better off. Thank you very little.
The problem is that you can't get an inflation protected annuity privately, at least not one that will work.
Inflation isn't an insurable event - all your policies go bad at once. Your company won't be there in 30 years when you need it.
The government, though, with the right benefits age, can do it. As inflation rises, wages rise too, so the money in equals the money out.
If you don't want an annuity (which works by not being inheritable, the up-side being that it's cheaper to buy), you may not like the option though.
I didn't mention annuities and there are certainly other options. As for the government being able to handle inflation adjusted benefits - how's that working out for you now? The money was loaned to the treasury and politicians spent the money with no plan to pay it back. That's a great system! We'll all go broke together. Excuse me if I'm not excited about the future of this Ponzi (I mean Madoff) plan.
I believe the "riot" in Egypt is now being called a Revolution. I also believe the climate seems very ripe in this country for one too.
Is the picture a metaphor of American exceptionalism? In the famous words of George Castanza "I had shrinkage..."
Or is it instead of loosing ones' shirt in the market place she lost her knickers? Maybe it is an example of the gov't trying to subsidize something. Nice idea, poor location.
Reading Muslim Brotherhood link followed by the TNR 5 things about Egypt link highlights the lack of awareness of the dangers of Islam.
Simply put, it's only ancillarily a religion; primarily its a political belief calling for world domination, and must be contested and destroyed (at least the political aspect, much like the Holy Roman Catholic political aspect was).
Until this is accomplished, Islam should never be accorded the Separation of Church and State rights that other wholely non-secular religions are granted.
No religion is non-secular. Religions are part of everyday life, for believers.
"No religion is non-secular."
The one exception that proves the rule:
They're a full-blown, tax-exempt "religion" as decreed by the IRS -- but have you ever heard of a "religion" that... doesn't have a god?
How about Confucianism? It's sort-of a religion. Or Taoism.
Rand Paul is an idiot suggesting ending foreign aid to Israel.
Israel is USA's only dependable ally in Middle East against the Islamists who are mobocrazing ther way to power in Tunsia and now Egypt and Jordan.
El presidente is throwing in with the Islamists again, suggesting Mubarack coopperate with it.
It is evident by Sayyid Qutb's Ma'alim fi al-Tariq that America is in Muslim Brotherhoods cross hairs and marked for destruction since at least 1964.
Islamist's war against America ain't new.
Scientology's god is IRS, evidently.
IRS calls it religion.
They call Islam religion, too. though neither Muhammadan nor Scientologist worship God.
