We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Snow on snow

It just keeps coming. Snow is up to my knees. Got myself plowed and shoveled out at 4 AM this morning, and headed right off into the snowy dark to Dunkin' for my morning fix, and took some snaps.


This would be a good morning to be in Vermont, with skis. It's beautiful.

I've never seen that in real life and never had to shovel it either.

I started at 6:00 still not done. didn't they say 6" of snow, I have 16" in West Hartford and I have run out of room to put the snow. Next snow fall the driveway will go from two cars wide to one.

Albuquerque news reported at 5:00 am that yall got 14" over night but it was light powder.

That's the most fun kind ta chuvel.

Funny thing 'bout the white, fluffy stuff. Inches are a deceptive metric. Had about 26-28 inches of the stuff, with much deeper drifts, a month ago. It was a ton of work to clear but no more work than the 7 or 8 inches of thick, heavy stuff we just got last night. YUCK! Even with a fair-sized snow thrower machine it was work.

And if you look at this wet, heavy stuff the wrong way it gets its knickers in a knot and packs itself into ice. Cranky stuff it is. This is the kind of stuff that would soon turn an ordinary ol' snowball fight into bloodshed and fistfights.

The six inches of cold fluff we had a couple weeks ago was, by contrast, child's play to clear away.

Was out in CO last week for some skiing. Snow, snow, and more snow. Six of eight days it snowed and four of those it snowed heavy. And wind to chill your bones. A wonderful good time. Gonna test NH's snow this weekend.

I'm jealous on two counts. Not only does Bird Dog gets all this snow & cold but he also gets Dunkin' Donuts. Neither of these are remotely possible for me.

Started at 5 AM - finished mine by 6:30 - did the elderly neighbors - finished that by 7:30. Started raking the snow off the roof at 8. Gave up at 9. Having oldest son and girlfriend come over and shovel the snow off the roof.

Your roof is pitched perfectly to get rid of the snow - we've got a hipped roof with no pitch to speak of so the snow piles up. Pain in the butt.

I ran my air conditioner yesterday.

Oh, I don't mean I ran it for very long. I'd left the boat closed up (squalls) while shopping and it felt kind of stuffy when I returned. Granted, I wouldn't normally run the AC on a balmy 80 degree day, so I just ran it for a few minutes.

You know, just long enough to cool the place down.

Let's hear it for air conditioning! Yippee!

Well, at least we found where the heat leaks are - I've got a couple of ice dams on the addition. They will go quick once we get some sun on the black rood, but still.

I'm so envious! Since I was 6 years old I've wanted to build my own snow man - ever since I saw in on the Mickey Mouse Club show.

Here in San Jose, California it's 70 degrees, light breeze, and blue skies.
Not snow man weather at all.

Ah, that's a light dusting. When I was stationed in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (twice in a 21 yr Air Force career) I recall the average annual snowfall was about 120 inches.
