We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
What I take from her piece is that socialism thrives on greed and envy as much as capitalism but it requires belief that greed and envy will disappear when the evils of capitalism are done away with. Unfortunately for socialists what they supposedly hope will appear is a version of homo sapiens that has yet to walk the earth. Socialism adores the idea of The New Man who rises or is forced or guided to rise above his former base self to take a seat in the realms of heavenly perfection. At least, that’s the theory. Believe in the perfectibility of man and it’s a trifle to believe in socialism and all the pleasures of collective life, even though it’s quickly demonstrated that this means widespread misery.
And motor fuel is taking up what proportion of the world's grain production?
African food production would explode if various silly protectionist laws would be repealed in Europe. But no, let's propose more ways to control people and limit liberty instead.
Our new governor here in Maine, within a 24-hour period, told the racist communists at NAACP what they should have been told decades ago... and then promptly attended the annual Maine Right to Life "Hands Around the Capitol" rally along with our Catholic Bishop. First time a sitting governor has attended in as long as I can tell... perhaps the first one ever.
I wonder if the NAACPers will take this as a positive sign, considering that most of the abortions committed in this country are on their pre-born constituency.
My hunch is that MLK Jr would be applauding Governor LePage.
